Infection control

Published

I took my nclex today ....had 265 questions . I tried the pvt trick and it send me to the credit card page . Bummed out but still hoping for the best . A friend of mine said if u fail right then they take away your GN license. I still have mine so still holding on to slim hope. I had a ton of infection control like airborne precaution and things like that and I know I didn't do well on those . Is there a book I can read detailed info on that? I also had a lot of pt teaching and side effects on psych meds . Once I receive my results on Sunday I will re register if I failed . I read hurst a couple times and the allnurses study guide . I liked the pneumonics they have for rembering infection control precautions but it didn't really have what is acceptable such as wearing mask , gown etc. I need help please! I also had like 14 select all that apply out of first 31 so I thought I was doing good . Any info will help thanks people !

I'm a huge fan of the Saunders book.

Yeah I know my material but i now know its not all about hurst I should've took a break when I was testing. THat made me restless . I just bought the lacharity book and I heard that is a must . I did have a lot of who should you see first and I know it was a guessing game there .

I know exactly what you mean about being restless. I too, went up to 200-something questions and I felt at a point I just couldn't even really focus or think straight anymore. Besides Hurst, I also used Kaplan's Strategies book....it has a section that really helped me with "priorities and delegation". I purchased it from Barnes and Noble...if it's something you can't afford or don't feel like you want to purchase too many books...go to a local Barnes and Noble store, see if they have that book available...sit down somewhere in the store or coffee shop and read through it to help you...it honestly really helped me along with re-listening and going over hurst again and again.

I just found out I passed my NCLEX-RN on Friday (trust me I thought I had failed...I actually cried during the test..mine stopped at 96 questions which took 1 hr and 15 minutes). However, here are some tips that I felt Kaplan really helped me with, specially with the "who do you see first" type of questions.

1. ABCs (airway breathing circulation) if the patient is having a problem with either one of these-don't ignore it

2. Is it a REAL problem or a POTENTIAL problem...REAL problem takes priority over potential problem

3. Is the problem ACUTE or CHRONIC...an ACUTE (sudden/new) problem takes priority of a chronic problem

4. If one the the people you are "triaging" is an infant/small child...remember they are most vulnerable vs. adult (however make sure you read the situations thoroughly as each case is different).

I thought of these each time I had a "who do you see first" questions and it really did help.

Good luck next time though, just take your time and definitely do not rush. Breaks are very important...I took an unscheduled break after 60 questions/45 min. This helped me get my sh*t together to go back and tackle the BEAST. :)

The post above offered great advice for the prioritization! I think Lacharity helped too. I had to do that in school, and so I went over it again before boards.

As for infection control, just memorize the pneumonics & memorize what each type needs. do flash cards if you have to.
