Indiana?

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

Hey! I am about to graduate from University of Rhode Island with a BSN in May. My boyfriend and I are thinking about relocating (he might go to law school at Valparaiso), and I was wondering what it was like in Northwestern Indiana for nurses!

I have been in contact with a woman at Community hospital in Munster...any opinions on the hospital? What is it like to work there? Are there good programs for new graduates? Are there any jobs?? (not looking so good here on the East Coast). Any information about this area/hospital is much appreciated!

Thanks everyone!

Anyone? Please?

I don't know anything about that particular hospital, but I do know that they get a lot of bad weather in the Valparaiso area. Lots of snow. There is a hospital in Valparaiso also. Sorry , I don't know much about that one either.

Hello. I live in Valparaiso. I am still a student, but I have had some experiece with the hospitals during clinicals. I do not know too much about Munster. The hospital in Valparaiso is called Porter. I did a clinical there and it is nice and there are a lot of job openings. The website is porterhealth.org. I also did clinicals at Methodist in Merrillville. Im not sure if this is true, but I did hear that Methodist pays the most around here. Well hope this helps!

Thank you so much!

Hello,

Hope I am not too late in responding to you. I worked at community for almost 8 years. It was a good hospital to work for. There were quite a few people that commuted to Munster to work from Valpo although it is about a 45 minute commute. I had to leave several months ago due to my husband's job being relocated but would recommend it. I am not sure what type of nursing you are thinking about but the nurse to patient ratios are good. The pay is competitive for northwest indiana. The benefits are pretty good too. Community is well known as a heart hospital. The do tons of CABG's and have a busy cath lab. (I worked tele for a long time there) The ER is brand new and busy! You will get a lot of good experience if you are up for a challenge. The peds end of it is there is a very busy nursery and NICU. Those areas are usually very well staffed though and can be tough to get into but you can always try. I know a few nurses recently retired. They are busy with outpatient stuff too. Community also owns St. Mary's in Hobart (much closer to valpo) and St. Catherines in E. Chicago. I would suggest calling a recruiter directly and letting them know you are coming out. Maybe you can tour and get a feel for it. It is a pretty big hospital (about 400 beds or so). I do recall being frustrated dealing w/ HR at times but once you are in, you really don't have to deal w/them too much. Just get over that hurdle. Hope this helps u! Good luck!
