Nurses Retired

I need HELP, how do you get back to working after a 4 yrs hiatus? I've been a RN since 2001. I be experience as staff RN and Charge nurse on m/s, Ortho-trauma, stroke, brain injury and Corrections. Liscense is current and active but due to a P.A. Taking back a verbal order my liscense was suspended for a few months. I don't care where the job is. If it's far away from Chicago I'll need relocation help though.

Hi Bronze,

I'm just like you, I have not been working for four years and am now approaching getting back into nursing! It's daunting isn't it!

I worked in Orthopaedics for four years and took a break to have kids.

I'm registered and have found an online course that I can afford. The re-entry courses are too expensive here, $10,000, so this is not an option.

I was giving myself three months to read journals, and create a reading list I can attach with my resume. I'm also doing a Post graduate certificate at a university. I'm hoping to network with the lecturers and try and get my foot in the door that way.

I plan to try doctors surgeries, nursing homes and bank/pool.

Would be great to keep in touch and give each other some moral support!

Best wishes,

Cat:nurse:

Thanks for the info and look forward to the support.. P.s. Austrailia was my dream graduation present from high school but I had a kid instead:-(! Someday tho

I wish both of you the best of luck. I also took some a break away from my nursing career, but I found positions in nursing homes and also in non-profit organizations. The draw back was the pay was not great. If working in a prison is something your willing to do or even even in Public Health Centers go on to your city jobs work site those two places usually have openings. Keep your heads up and rack up on some educational CEU'S

I have been out of nursing for almost 3 years. My husband and I are stationed in Japan with the Navy. My plan is to apply and hope to get a job. If I get some feedback about my time away, I plan to take a refresher course. That is the only thing I can think of to do :/

I agree with the above comments by grabbing some courses or CEUs to show your continued interest in nursing. I have done some hiring in my career and as long as the nurse shows ambition and willingness to learn/re-learn skills, there is no reason for not giving them an opportunity. My biggest mistake was hiring a veteran nurse that was too proud to ask questions about new equipment.

Go Get'em! Good Luck!

Make sure you spell "liscense " correctly on your application:).

I'm in Japan as well. We've been here for a year and I have been out of nursing for the same amount of time. We're here for three more years and it's not very likely I will work for the remainder of my husband's tour. I will have had a four year break from nursing at that time. I do volunteer with the Red Cross, but I am not really assuming an RN role. I am planning on taking a refresher course when we leave Japan.

Nurses are wonderful people, full of experience. Can't you take a refresher course to re-enter the field? After 38 yrs I have decided to leave the field but am leaning on everything I learned to start a business helping people. Good luck and don't give up.
