In need of advice, please?

I'm not quite sure what to do and I was hoping that some of you with a little more experience could offer some advice! I am currently on the waitlist for the nursing program and believe that I should be called for winter 09. I was laid off about 3 months ago and have had no luck in finding employment:( I have completed all pre-reqs and co-reqs for the program and will take classes towards my bachelors this fall while I wait... Since unemployment only lasts so long I'm getting a little scared that I'm not going to be able to find a job and we absolutely will NOT survive without me bringing some kind of income in! I had hoped that since I got laid off I'd be accepted into the fall program and then I'd at least have a med/surge rotation under my belt and be eligible to obtain a nurse extern position before my unemployment benefits expired. That's obviously not going to happen and I don't know what to do. I heard about the Nursing Assistant traning program through the Red Cross and thought maybe I should pursue that while I wait. Maybe then I'll be able to obtain a job quickly. Some people say it's a waste of time and money ($900) because I'll be learning the very same stuff in a few short months. I'm also fearful that if an employer sees that I'm awaiting entrance into the program they won't want to waste time on hiring me for a position they know will only be semi-temporary. Advice please???:banghead:

Sorry so long, I'm just looking for some insight! Thanks for listening:):heartbeat

I'm so sorry you're in a less than ideal situation right now:( The economy is so tough right now, and I know how difficult it can be to not have employment.

Where have you applied? What types of jobs are you applying for? Even though they might be jobs you don't necessarily want to take I'd apply to every restaurant, bar, fast food joint, and every store in the closest mall... A lot of places will probably be hiring within the next few weeks if they lose a lot of employees going back away to college or back to high school. A job is a job and when times are tough it's not really possible to be picky.

Once you get called for winter 09 semester you can start working in the hospital as a tech that summer, and you will be able to quit your temporary and possibly less than ideal job.

I don't know as I'd go in to an interview and tell them I'd be quitting in January. I would just omit that. When asked when you can work let them know when you can work currently and through the fall semester. When you go back to school let them know your schedule a few weeks before you are scheduled to begin, and let them know that they'll need to be flexible. If they're not willing to work with it you can move on, but I find if you're a good employee your job will be happy to schedule you whenever you can work.

I guess I just wish you the best and hope your situation improves. Keep us posted and perhaps someone else will come along and offer superior advice. Just keep applying (and not a few place I'm talking 50 here) and you will get hired somewhere. Good luck:loveya:

Some places don't even require you to be a certified CNA to be hired. When I started at Beaumont as an assistant they trained me. Put in applications everywhere, Oakwood, St. Johns, DMC, Beaumont, HFH etc. Take whatever you can find. Don't be stingy. Some places don't pay more than 12 bucks an hour for a CNA with or without certification.

Believe me, I'm not being picky:no:. I've probably submitted at least 100 resumes and not one call. It's just very strange! I have applied for sitter, receptionist, transport...I've applied at every hospital possible and even places like, target, lowes, home depot just to name a few. I know there is no way I will make even close to what I was before and at this point I'm just aiming to match my unemployment which comes out to about $10 an hour. It's been an adjustment learning to live on that but I've made it over three months now:clown:. I appreciate the advice and welcome more:yeah:. I think the one thing I'd really like to determine is whether I should pursue the red cross nursing assistant training while I wait to start the program?

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I decided to take the cna class at the Hazy Institute of Learing. I just finished it two weeks ago. It is $600 and is only 2 weeks. The waitlist wasn't as long as the Red Cross one. When I called Red Cross at the end of June, I was told there wouldn't be space in it until the beginning of september. I called Hazy the same day and I was able to start a class that next monday. I haven't taken my test yet, but I think in the long run it is going to be good and also help me out alot for school. I think there are a couple of other companies that hold them too. Oh, if you are currently on unemployment you may be able to get it paid for by the state. Try at Michigan Works. I was already off unemployment so I couldn't do it.

Hope that helps.

I can ask HR @ HF Wyandotte if they are hiring for other positions like transport, nursing aide (do you have your CPR card?) that can at least get you in the door and perhaps at the top of the list for an externship when you qualify. I work on Fri and will let you know what I find out. I know for externs they start interviewing in May, June and October.

Have you called around area hospitals to see what is available? It is so important I have realized to be work in a hosp setting as an aide or extern before becoming an RN because there is so much to learn and you will at least have a decent grip on things when you precept after graduation. I am so grateful to be an extern; my confidence has grown as well as other skills. I am prepared for clinicals this time around!

If you are proactive, something will open up and you will find something. I will cross my fingers for you! I'll be in contact on Fri!
