IMPACT OF SLANDER

It's funny that I happen to come across this topic today.

Mainly, because it's a unique situation, and secondly, because just this week in my nursing program, several students have very good reason to suspect that this same thing is happening in our program.

You are correct...the innocent shouldn't have to pay and personally, the students who were not involved should get together and formally protest the assignment.

I wouldn't do it if I had nothing to do with the incident. I'd get the group together to protest the assignment.

Did the teacher prove the elements of slander? Was it untrue and malicious? Did it significantly injure her reputation? Sounds not. Truth is an absolute defense to slander.

if you end up doing this assignment, i might turn it around, because, in a sense, YOU are being slandered by being accused of it......at the least i would define it and ask as quoted poster above says, was it met?

and is she really upset because she got caught?

you arent perhaps studing ethics right now? was this a set up?

the first thing i would do is list the desirable qualities in both a human being and a nurse. that covers the individual and the nursing profession. see http://www.nursingschools.com/guidance/nursing-top-10.html - top 10 qualities of a great nurse. i'm not sure where you would look to find the desirable qualities in a human being. maybe on a religious website? i tried doing a search for "desirable human qualities" and what came up was dating relationships and employer/employee relationships. defining the word "good" is highly subjective and there is a whole internet out there to search (http://www.wikihow.com/be-good). i reprint my list of desired employee qualities a lot on allnurses, so you can use that as a start, however, it doesn't cover ethics which i think has to play a big part in this:

initiative - autonomy
dynamism - energy
positive outlook
responsibility
orientation to the client and co-workers (ability to provide customer service)
learning capacity
productivity
high adaptability - flexibility
leadership
team work
tolerance to pressure
analytic ability
professional development

anyway, the next thing to do is define slander. that should be easy enough to find on the internet. the last part of this essay will just be your opinion on how slander will affect those qualities you described in the beginning. that is purely your opinion and thinking. i'd have a great time writing this.

a two good quotations that i would use to start or end the paper are from mark twain, "it takes your enemy and your friend, working together, to hurt you to the heart; the one to slander you and the other to get the news to you" (http://www.yourdictionary.com/quotes/slander) and this one by buddha "the evils of the body are, murder, theft, and adultery; of the tongue, lying, slander, abuse, and idle talk; of the mind, covetousness, hatred, and error" (http://thinkexist.com/quotes/with/keyword/slander/).

good luck. don't look at this as a punishment, but as an exercise in philosophy (i took a philosophy class and there is no subject that they won't debate). you are being asked to think and express an opinion about this event. organize it well. talk about what the ideals of nursing are, how individuals within the profession strive to meet those ideals and how being accused of slander can affect that or have no place there.

What are the requirements of this assignment - is it graded? Does it form part of your academic record? Otherwise I would not put any work into it apart from writing some rubbish to make up 1500 words.
