Hi! I am a student hopefully and have applied to an RN program. Grades are good, entrance test scores are good and I am saying my prayers that I get accepted. I have a major concern though. I have never been vaccinated for Chickenpox or MMR, nor have I had the diseases. The reason I was not immunized is because of a severe egg allergy. I went to my family phyisican today to get a titer done so I am waiting to get the results back which will probably take a few days. I have taken my Hep vac. and other vacs that are not cultured in egg but I am concerned that not being able to take the MMR or MMRV will keep me from being able to enter the program if I get into the program. Does anyone out there have any knowledge on this subject? I would appreciate your suggestions. Thank you!

The CDC has cleared MMR for people with egg allergies for a while now, citing research done by the AAP - Vaccines: VDP-VAC/Combined/MMR/Clinical FAQs
The AAP's "Red Book" Committee no longer considers egg allergy a contraindication to MMR vaccination.
Here's another document that should clear your worries:

If you are medically prohibited from receiving these vaccines, all you need to do is contact the person in charge of collecting the information and let them know. They should be able to tell you what documentation you need to become clinically compliant (Which is typically why nursing schools require these vaccines).
I have a friend with a severe egg allergy, she has been an RN for years! Her place of employment required the flu shot, she was just required to provide documentation of her allergy.
You guys are the best! Thanks so much! This is terrific information and I truly appreciate it. Happy Thanksgiving (almost! ) :)

as with any vaccine, there's laws to protect those who refuse. you have a legitimate medical reason. here's a link.....

Thank you for going right to the correct source! when in doubt about any Vax question the CDC website is the Holy Grail. Another good site is CHOP(Children's Hospital of Philadelphia), FYI. I am very pro-vaccine, and am just a bit "annoyed" when it comes to misinformation. There have been significant outbreaks of both Mumps and Measles recently in my part of the country. The age groups most significantly impacted? adolescent-college age.
I understand your position, I used to be pro-vaccine myself. The only thing I enjoy about the CDC site is that they post the ingredients of the vaccines, which can be quite helpful for people wanting to know what's in them and can be the deciding factor whether to get the vaccine or not. If you want only pro-vaccine info and nothing more, then the CDC is where to go. I get "annoyed" when people ONLY look at one side instead of looking at both and THEN decide what to do. Some people are happy doing that and that's fine but those that are cautious (like myself) aren't misinformed. Maybe some like myself are and I can only account for myself but I carefully look at BOTH sides before deciding what to do for my kids or myself. Please keep that in mind. :)
I respect ur right to choose for urself and ur family. Please remember that your choices do impact others. Vaccine safety and efficacy is impacted by these choices, remember Herd Immunity is what you are relying on. Also, when looking at "sources" of info on the web on this subject, be very careful. Dr. Bob Sears the Guru who has stirred up a whole lot of --it in La County, can probably be pointed to as the primary reason for the recent pertussis outbreak. BTW, I have spoken to Dr. Bob, he personally believes 100% in Vax, he told me, he is basically preaching what his followers "want". Don't get me started on Jenny McCarthy!! In closing, I just wanted this young lady, a student to be able to have the correct info, from a reputable source.

To the OP: You are wise to think this issue through thoroughly BEFORE entering the health care field. If you decide that you will NOT get vaccines, then your job choices will be limited -- and you need to deal with that now rather than later. Do you really want a nursing career bad enough to get the vaccines?
Employers DO have a right to require vaccines of employees and students. And if you don't get those vaccines, certain jobs will not be available to you -- and certain student clinical rotations may be impossible to arrange and that may prevent you from graduating. I work for a children's hospital that has a strict policy. People without required vaccines are either not allowed ... only allowed in certain areas ... or allowed only if they wear masks 100% of the time ... etc. ... period ... end of story. No exceptions, not even for medical necessity. People do not have the right to come into our facility and endanger our patients. If you can't take the steps required to minimize the risk to our patients, we won't let you near the patients.
If, after reviewing the scientific evidence with your doctor, you decide not to receive the required vaccines ... you should then think through your choice of career and be sure that you are willing to live with the job limitations that you will face. Then make your choice and be prepared to live with the consequences of that choice, one way or the other.
I personally don't believe in the whole "the more people are vaccinated the less chance those that aren't will get sick". Sorry I just don't. Since the diseases were on the decline just before vaccines were introduced....I think what helps is education. Shall I say we're a cleaner nation then say 60+ years ago. These poor countries that still have these diseases have poor sanitation, dirty water and lack of personal hygiene. I'm NOT saying vaccines don't help because I do think they have a purpose in some cases. I've only seen a few things on what Jenny McCarthy has to say about this issue and frankly I think she's right. Is there a reason to inject a bunch of toxins into a new baby? Or even in the 1st year? The immune system is devoloping rapidly in the 1st 2 years of life and I don't think it's safe/healthy to put toxins in a child during that time, or anyone for that matter. I am very careful when researching any topic. The only pro-vaccine site I go to is CDC but that's to look up the ingredients list and I don't go on anti-vaccine sites either. Actually I don't go on any vaccine site....I look up the disease itself (on a non-vaccine site of course). Most of these diseases are self limiting and treatment is quite effective IF by the extremely small chance my child would come in contact with it. The damage a vaccine can cause scares me more, so more often I refuse. I too want this student to be informed because I know what we're taught in nursing school and it's all VERY one sided. :/

OP...please don't listen to this crap! YOU have rights! Nobody can discriminate against you. Every state has some sort of exemption, either medical, religious or philosophical. People don't know this....they see required on a form and they automatically run to the doctors to get the vaccine(s). If a facility doesn't want a law suit, then you'll be allowed to work wherever your heart desires. Most recent cases were those nurses last year refusing the swine flu vaccine when that whole drama was going on. Anyway....I just don't want this pro-vaccine nurse to scare you from doing what you want! :)
