I'm still taking prereq's but have been taking NCLEX practice tests

Published

Hello all,

I am currently taking my prerequisites for Nursing, and I sometimes take NCLEX practice tests online or I also use an app on my phone that has an NCLEX practice test on it. I thought for sure that I would get almost all of the questions wrong, but I wanted to get an idea of what to expect. I was surprised to find out that I got 75% of the questions correct :) I went to different sections of the practice test, thinking it was just that one section I did well on, but I realized that I do pretty well on all the sections! I know the NCLEX isn't really anything like Nursing school OR being an actual Nurse, but still it makes me happy that I already have a grasp of whats to come.

So...strange question but, is this a good sign that I got the majority of the practice questions right? :uhoh3:

Thanks!

:lol2:

No offense, but I can't help but think that the NCLEX app that you are using is not truly representative of the types of questions you'll get on the real NCLEX.

Does the NCLEX app include "select all that apply" questions, i.e. where you can choose anywhere from 1 to ALL of the answers as correct, and where your response is incorrect if you miss even one of the correct responses, or choose one of the incorrect ones? This is the hardest type of question and unless your app includes these, it's not representative.

I studied using Saunders and also Moseby, and found that they were pretty reflective of the difficulty of the real NCLEX when I took it.

Not to discourage you -- I do think it's a good sign that you're scoring well on the practice questions, but I'd be careful about reading too much into it.

Good luck with nursing school!

Yes, the app does include those kinds of questions. I understand that the NCLEX is just a small portion of the whole Nursing education package, but I was just surprised because I thought I would have done worse considering I've never taken an actual Nursing course yet. Thanks to all of you for the answers. :)

I'm glad you realize there is more to it.

Being a good test taker will be very helpful to you.

Good luck :)

This post is kind of irritating and a bit unbelievable... for example (and I'm sure this is petty) but why would you post this under General Nursing Discussion? You are not a nurse and not even in nursing school? Why not share this with other pre-nursing students.... there is a very specific section for that.

Am I becoming a bitter nurse?

I do agree that I should have put it in the Pre-Nursing section, I usually categorize my questions correctly but I was in a rush when I posted this thread. Sorry if it's irritating and unbelievable, but keep in mind I am younger than you and I obviously don't have the experience and knowledge that you do, so my questions might seem dumb to a seasoned nurse such as yourself.

I don't think there's anything wrong with practicing NCLEX questions to help me gain confidence.

If I were you, I wouldn't share your NCLEX success with your fellow students or nursing instructors. Just keep it under your hat :)

Why do you say that? Will students and instructors treat me differently?

They probably won't treat you differently, but they may think you are tooting your own horn, so to speak. If you tell people at school, you might have instructors or classmates that think you are bragging or think you don't need to study. You'll also have classmates that struggle with their classes and have a hard time making passing grades. If they find out that you are telling people that you were getting good NCLEX test scores before you even started, you might find yourself the target of resentment.

Oh okay, makes sense. I have classmates that brag to me and I know how irritating it is.

that's great that you're starting early. I did too. First things first though. If you are really serious, you would focus on getting into school first (with scholarships over loans) and work as a CNA/tech and then work on NCLEX preparations with better NCLEX prep books

I second CNA/tech experience. It's no longer optional if you want to land a job as a new grad.

Thanks! Yes, I've been applying for jobs in local hospitals such as Unit Clerk or Registrar positions. I haven't heard much though because I don't have experience in the healthcare field yet. An RN I know told me to look into Phlebotomy or Monitor Tech programs, she said hospitals usually offer training however I have not found any sort of training in my city. There are two reputable Monitor Tech and Phlebotomy programs, which are at the local community college.
