I'm moving to Ann Arbor job search help/advice

Specializes in hopefully ICU someday....

Hey all,

I'll be moving to AA in mid March 2014. I have been applying to st joes, the VA and UMHS. So far I've only had a video skype type interview with the VA, but didn't get the position.

My last day at my now previous job was Monday and I'm starting to, well, be a bit concerned that no one has contacted me for any positions at all. Though I've been applying for months and have an MI license.

I'm not a new grad. I have been an ICU RN since 2011 and an RN since 2010. I do have an associates degree (I know I know) and SJMHS and UMHS both are a scrabbling for the golden ring of magnet status which makes me not the most attractive candidate....

So,

Do I stand any sort of chance of getting a position at UMHS (my first choice)? Or SJMHS?

And if it's going to be a while before I can work there, where else should I be looking? Arbor hospice? Some drug company? Home infusion companies?

I am getting ready to cast a wide net here, because I need to be working sooner rather than later.

My 7 month old needs her rent paid!

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Have you thought about casting your net a little wider? There are also many health systems in the metro detroit area including Henry Ford, DMC, Karmanos, Beaumont, St. John Providence, Oakwood, and others. I work in one of these health systems and many of my co-workers commute from AA. Otherwise, keep applying. Not sure about the specifics of hiring where you are applying but experience is good, and I've heard the hiring process at U-M can take quite awhile. Good luck!

Specializes in Neuro ICU and Med Surg.

Have you thought about Henry Ford, St.John system (Providence, Providence Park), DMC, Oakwood? I was told Henry Ford is on a possible hiring freeze, but I would look into it. Keep applying. Definitely cast the net a little wider. I too work for one of these systems and have co workers that commute from Ann Arbor. There are also smaller community hospitals in Chelsea and Tecumseh as well. Good luck.

I am at UMHS and I know they are pushing for Magna status big time. My manager won't even hire a tech that works here with her associates. I think its BS but I understand why UMHS is doing it. But you never know. I think they have a nursing carrer fair right now... I have heard great things about Henry Ford. Good luck!

Specializes in Med/Surg, ICU, ER, Peds ER-CPEN.

I work at UMHS too and it depends on the unit manager (SICU recently wanted to hire an experience nurse with ADN but were told no by their manager), ADNs are finding it harder and harder to get their foot in the door, I'm still getting rejection letters from VA and I'm prior service. Mercy in Monroe takes ADNs, I haven't heard good things about Promedica (Adrian & Tecumseh hospitals) also have had several poor experiences as both a pt and parent in past year
