I'm no longer pursuing nursing

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

It really pains me to write this. Nursing has been my passion for as long as I cam remember. Hearing my aunt's stories of how rewarding it is and how much there is to learn inspired me to want to become a nurse. Then I got to college, and collapsed under the stress of things. I got a C- in Chemistry ON BOTH RETAKES, a D+ on the first A&P I attempt and a C+ on the second, a C- in A&P II, and I'm projected to get an A in Microbiology. The other prerequisites (statistics, nutrition, child development, etc) are A's and B's. Sometimes I wish I was a better student and I hadn't been so distracted. I hate that I wasn't able to accomplish what I wanted. Every school I have looked at has to look at pluses and minuses, and it's bringing me down. It makes me wonder what patient would want a nurse who could barely get a C in her SCIENCE classes? It's hopeless and I have decided t move my major into something else. I wanted this so bad, but I really can't do it anymore. It sucks that schools look at pluses and minuses and it sucks that I was so close, but I'm so far. I'm done.

Have you considered taking a time out by going to LPN school, then maybe working as an LPN for awhile? You could “age out” your poor grades, then retake them, perhaps even one at a time, to get those A’s. I would not do this though unless you got some intensive academic help. Find out what you need to do to your study methods to bring you up to par. Worth some thought.

Hi Tiffany,

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing such difficulties. I agree with the post above...there are other ways to get into a university nursing program. It might be a few extra steps and some money, but there is no straight path to get to your destination. It also doesn't matter how long it takes you to get there, but as long as you finish.

It can be tough and discouraging, but you came this far. Maybe you're learning style has changed and or you're not incorporating things into your schedule in order to help you get the grades you know that you're capable of achieving.

Speaking from experience, I struggled in elementary school math and had awful math teachers. I barely passed grade 9 math and then excelled with flying colours in the applied grade 10 math - I took mixed level math in grade 11 and did well. However, I gave myself some time after graduation and I ended up doing well in college math.

Now, I have a completely different perspective on math and I actually enjoy it. The important thing is to weigh your options and explore your other avenues. Sometimes things don't work right now, but that doesn't mean it won't work later.

Hope this helps ?

there are still other pathways to nursing. You could become a CMA, LPN/LVN, or PCT. work those jobs for a few years, then regroup to retake all your courses. Also if you decide to do that, focus on the colleges that look at the last 30-60 course credits, which could be to your advantage. Now it's not going to be easy, but if you want it, then you must put in the work. Good luck to you and I wish you well.

I'm sorry you're going through this! what's your study schedule like? it seems like you were overwhelmed by the course load and let stress take over (happens to the best of us). I have nursing friends with nutrition degrees so that might be a option for a change of major?
