I'm just so confused. I just started as a school nurse. I don't know if I just don't like it, or if I'm just so new and inexperienced. We have about 180 kids. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, but now... I feel like I don't know what I'm doing sometimes. I feel like I'm going to make a huge mistake, not with my care, but with all the paperwork. I've read so many of the post, "I love my job," "Great hours." "Parents aren't so wonderful." I feel so lost. There's another school nurse that I can ask questions of, but I feel like I'm always bugging her. She's got her own students to worry about. I'm not certified, I'll be going to school starting in June 2014. I have to start the application process soon, but I don't want to spend all the money on college courses to get certified only to find out that I really just hate this. HELP!!

I don't have anything helpful to add, except to say that the past two days I have been feeling the same way and it's really comforting to see other school nurses struggling with the same issues. And reading all the responses has been very helpful as well. So really just - hang in there, we will both get through this! And thank you for starting this topic.

Another thing I have found helpful is to separate projects by binders and not folders...with a binder you have to 3 hole punch and then can separate by need with dividers. The folders some times get lost in the paper shuffle on my desk!

I'm grateful for the highly trained health clerk - she does all the immunization and health alert paperwork.

I was very lucky to have a retired school nurse decide to help educate the 6 new school nurses in our district - she was tired of nurses being hired with NO training and policy and procedure book. We met for 6 months, once a month and I have a binder with good info. From this group, I now meet once a month with local school nurses and public health nurses.

Also, NASN (National Association of School Nurses) has great information plus each state has its own state organization. There is a yearly conference for NASN and each state organization meets as well. www.nasn.org

In California, we have what is called "The Green Book" . . .a very handy book to purchase.
