I'm a US citizen and and a former USMilitary from Maryland/Virginia graduating nursing here in Manila, Philippines this March of 2008. I need to know if had to take and pass the Phililippine Nursing Licensure Exam(NLE) to get qualified to take the NCLEX specifically for the state of Maryland, Virginia and/or Washington DC. I have no plans to work/reside here in the Phil not until I retire or have my own hospital...hehe=)
1. What if I take the NLE then fail it? What would be the consequences? Will it affect my employment and/or application for the NCLEX for those states mentioned?
2.What is the difference of someone who took the Phil NLE then failed it with someone who did't take the NLE upon aplication for US employment? is there any?
3. Somebody told me that the state of Virginia requires Philippine license even though you're a US citizen. I need to clarify this.
4.Is CGFNS required for those states mentioned with my case?
5.How to apply for the NCLEX? what papers should i bring with me? etc...

Hi there,
I think your best bet would be to contact the state Board of Nursing for where you plan to work.
Good luck.

Hi Mark
Unless you are a Philippine citizen I don't think you can sit the local boards. For information on the state I would say check their website out. Most states just require CES from CGFNS but if the CGFNS exam is required you will have to do it as you will be classed as a foreign trained nurse and will always have to meet their requirements when applying to different states.

under the law unless your a dual citizenship you cannot apply for local RN exam. only citizen of the philippines can sit for the exam. but if your taking CGFNS i think you have to write on what to dothat matter if they can waived it since you cant sit fr the local exam. regarding the requirments for eligibility kindly visist the state borad of website, again your not aplying for NCLEx its eligibility.
its not a big deal even you failed many times in the NLE if wont reflect in your license same sa the NLEX_USRN exam

you don't need nle. us citizens or other non filipino citizens are not allowed to take nle, if you are a dual citizen you can, however, in your case, you don't need nle. you need to contact your board of nursing in your home state, or the state you wish to work. they are the only people who can give you an information on how to get an rn license. each states has their own requirements for nursing licensure.
you don't need to take cgfns exam certificate as well, ( again, you need to ask your home state board of nursing for what requirements you need for licensure). pls. don't hesitate to ask us here if you need more help. goodluck to you:welcome:

The states of New Mexico, Vermont, and California does not require CGFNS certificate. If you want to sit for an NCLEX exam, try applying in the BONs of the states mentioned. HOWEVER, check their rules regarding Licensure by Endorsement or Reciprocity.
PS: also check Maryland & Washington's BON rules regarding Licensure by Endoresement.
Thanks Miakea, Silverdragon, Dave23, AceCareer! its just that it takes a while to get a feedback from the Board of Nursing back from my home state and my relatives are not so familiar with this case daz why they can't feed me info regarding this. Anyway RNhawaii if ur a girl can u just take me with you there in hawaii then ill just reciprocate my license to maryland? heheh joke!
