Stumbled across and ad from Kindred Hospital in Chicago (on Monster.com) They are looking for LPNs with "Intravenous Blood Certification" Does this mean LPNs can GIVE/START the blood transfusion as well as monitor for a reaction?

Here is a link to one section of the Illinois Nursing Practice Act:
http://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/068/068013000000440R.html
It doesn't specifically discuss the scope of practice for the LPN, but it sets down the rules for creating an LPN med admin class. It says that the curriculum should include training on monitoring existing transfusions, but not training in actually hanging/starting the blood. I'm assuming that means that it's an RN function in IL, as it is in many other states.

I havent ever heard of a certification for LPN's to administer transfusions. I think i would start with the board of nursing or IDPR and see if they have a certification listed. There is a number on their website i think, they should be able to clear any confusion.
