You never have to re-take the boards as long as you maintain an active license somewhere. You can live in Wisconsin and work in Minnesota, so long as you endorse to Minnesota and continue to pay the BON for your renewal licenses/meet any of their continuing education requirements.
ETA- I live in Massachusetts. I have worked with many nurses over the years who live in New Hampshire or RI but practice in MA. Some of them I don't even think are licensed in the state they live in.

I live in Indiana and work in Kentucky. I let my Indiana license expire years ago.

You can also hold a license in more than one state at a time.

You take boards one time. You can hold licenses in many states.
