As per advice by Ms. Silverdragon, I'd like to start this thread and ask for help to those IELTS takers who took and passed their Writing test with scores of 7.5 and above. I'm in great distress right now. I took my IELTS and passed everything, except Writing. (6.5 - WRITING!!!:angryfire)
I really don't know how I failed this. I always though I'm good in expressing myself through writing. Anyway, I hope someone here who passed his/her writing (score of 7.5 & up) can give me some lectures or tips how to score well on this test. I only have 31 days left before my next IELTS and i really hope i wont fail this time. im AU-bound so i need 7.
Also, I sought Scotts English's service. It's informative and helpful but, ufortunately, not enough to pass my writing. Its case to case basis anyway, might help you, but not me (things like that)
Please, please, please I need your help guys. Thanks.
but don't make the same primary school level grammar mistakes in your exam and if you do - they might give you the same mark as before or even lower.[...and if you do, they might give you the same... lower.]
i wish you all the best and good luck with your exam !
my english is not perfect but i received good marks. :) even you make mistakes too - the same primary school level grammar mistakes including the correct use of punctuation marks. i think mistakes are really part of any exam; it would be really hard to perfect it.
i'm pretty sure hotpotato appreciates your help, however, it seemed a bit too critical and not really helpful anymore. grammar is only one component of a good essay, but the thought and how ideas are organized, are important too. we can advise her in a way that would not be offensive - e.g. advise her to always double check her grammar and spelling. or you can send a private message if you feel it might make her feel uneasy if you post it publicly. just my .
anyway, good luck again sis!
You're wrong again.
For your level , here is a recommended reading for punctuation related info :

Hi Hotpotato101 and Aelith,
You may go for OET test instead of IELTS.It's a custom-built exam for people just like you.
Once you're in Australia , you can build up your grammar and go for IELTS then. ( so that you can move on to other country in future ). You can't achieve grammar skills in short period of time and it's an on-going process.
Friend of mine score 7 in written IELTS even without the ending paragraph. So,as long as you don't make mistake and your grammar is OK , nothing will stop you from scoring 7.
Another thing to take note is that , when you score 7 a few years ago , chances are you probably end up scoring 6.5 or even 6 these days due to half-point system in affect.

Hello george76 :)
Thank you for the advise but I've already passed IELTS and have a good score in writing. I'm one of those helping hotpotato and the others. :)
I agree with you that grammar skills cannot be mastered overnight; it really takes time. So, it is really important not to rely on grammar alone since other important aspects can be easily mastered compared to that; one of which is the proper format for any essay - introduction, body and conclusion.

Hi...
Congraduations!since you got the great score, would you mind teaching how to get 7 in speaking? I am so fustrated and always stuck in 6.5. so upset......thank you so much
hi n50307!!!
i've scored high on my ielts....
one important thing to remember is be truthful.... especially if you're being asked about personal matters during the 1st part...(eg. the place where you live...or your workplace....)
on the second part where you need to talk for a few minutes straight, if you don't have much to say, mention different examples to support your main idea...
the examiner will work on the ideas you've given....
hi hotpotato...
i had my workshop for ielts with idp....
our instructor gave us a lot of tips for the exam...
here are some of them:
>make sure that the checker (i don't know what they call themselves...) won't have to count the words you've written... write more than the needed words...
>use paragraphing but you don't have to indent the first line... just leave a space in between the paragraphs...
>don't use quotes nor use the same words over&over because such words won't be counted...
>give 20mins for the 1st part, then go on the second part even if you haven't finished the 1st... if you still have some remaining time, you can go back to the first to finish it... the 2nd part has more points...
