IDK what to do.

Nursing Students CNA/MA

So I was offered a part time position 7-3 on a telemetry/med surg. floor a week ago today as a nursing assistant. The day before I interviewed at a cardiology office (really didnt plan on hearing back..decided to go at last minute..wasnt even going to go). I went for the heck of it..and I missed the ladys phone call yesterday called her back and left a voicemail...then missed her call today. She left a voicemail "regarding the position". This is for a medical assistant position which I graduated with an A.A.S. in December 2010. I really think she was calling to possibly offer me the position. Im surprised because she really didnt ask me that many questions..and like I said I really didnt count on it or try that much. Idk the details pay etc. for the position...but do I call her back again? I dont know what to say if she offers me the position. I thought she said when I asked that she sends letters usually to the people she did not choose...and I havent received a letter. Do I say I was offered a position last week, (I mean I go for the physical the 10th and 23rd is orientation..so idk if its "official yet") and that if I can think about her offer (which I would need to know the details). The downside of the medical assistant position at the cardiology office is that its sort of far for me from my house (maybe 20 minutes with no traffic)...and I would be getting driven by my mother. Shes the one who told me to apply there..but shes funny like that and may say its too far now. It would be hard to catch a bus there I think also. Also the women mentioned that their hours are usually 8-5 but one doctor "thinks" that they start at 730 so I would probably have to be there at 730 which would be very hard for me. Im confused.

I think it depends on the pay and what your long-term goal is. If you want to get in at a hospital and build your career there, maybe be a RN eventually, I personally would work at the hospital. I think it would be a great opportunity to get your foot in the door and get hospital experience. But on the other hand, the MA position is full time, so if money is an issue I would take the full time job.

Yeah I have to find out the pay etc...idk If I would want to go for RN ever..I mean I just spent 3 years at this college. I mean I went for Medical Assisting...but maybe eventually I can continue to grow and be trained at the hospital /use some of my MA skills at the hospital. Just confusing...just afraid to make the wrong decision! I have to call the women back soon!

Yeah I would at least call her back and see what they are offering you. I know making a huge decision like this is soooo stressful!

I would have your decision in your mind before you get the lady on the phone. No sense in stringing her along if you have decided to take the hospital job. But chances are high that she will offer the job to another if she has not been able to contact you by now.

I honestly wish I had my decision made up in my mind...it would be hard for me to make a decision without knowing the details...so maybe Ill call her (scared to lol), and hopefully she would give me the details.

Most of the places I have been interviewed at called back and wanted me to come in to tell me about pay, benefits, etc. They also wanted me to shadow the employees and do some work as well to see how well they thought I would do. A lot of offices around here want to see how fast you pick up on things and see your skills before hiring you. I would call just in case.

I did call the cardiology office (MEDICAL ASSISTANT POSITION)and she did offer the position to me! Now its a reality and I have to choose between 2 jobs :( Im not sure how many people she interviewed, but it was in the paper, and I honestly didnt expect to hear back from her.. wasnt even going to interview there. She didnt really ask me many questions at the interview. Its full time m-f $12hr., but the benefits are $60 something (the cheapest) every two weeks..but you have to spend a bunch out of pocket before the copays even kick in! The thing is its further for me and I would be getting dropped off by my mother. The office hours are supposed to be m-f 8-5 but, one Dr. "thinks" they start at 730..so some girls rotate starting that early. I told her that it would be hard for me to do that..and she said if someone was on vacation that I would have to then. 8AM is probably still too early for me to get there I think. Im not sure if the distance thing is the major thing stopping me...I also dont want to burn any bridges with the hospital which is part of a huge system...the HR department at the hospital is prob. in charge of alot of the other satellite facilities! The ad said for the cardiology place "exceptional vitals, and ekgs" I told her I knew the basics of EKG'S but have never really done one, but I didnt really mention that I need a little more practice with vitals. I dont want them to fire me if they think I am not doing good after a few weeks..then I would be screwed! So its the cardiology office where I would be doing alot of ekg's ,vitals, charting etc. or the hospital telemetry/med surg floor $11.65 hr with benefits (not sure how expensive or good)...which Im not 100% what I would be doing. My moms boyfriends daughter is a nurse manager and used to work at this hospital and is going to ask her about the floor I was offered. I thought the recruiter said at the hospital that, the full time benefits are 80/20 and part time 90/10 whatever that means?! Also that you have to wait 90 days to bid, unless its from part time to full time which she told me you can do right away?! Would it have to be the same exact floor though? Thanks Im so confused and if you need me to give me u more info I will...just very stressed and scared...and have to MAKE A DECISION BY FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with MsSantana... Working at the hospital would give you far more experience patient wise... you never know when something could go wrong... once there you could transfer to different floors or units... pick up more time on other units... example I work in a special care unit... I am trained to work in intensive care or out on the med surg floors now as well... depends on your money situation, mileage, gas its my two cents

I suggest taking the hospital position... does it offer shift differential? here it is $1.50 more

Yes I took the hospital job. Go for the 2hr+ physical Tuesday and then back Thurs. Orientation is the 23rd. I do not know if it offers shift differential. I have to review the stuff again she sent to my email, I know it's $11.65hr. and $17 something for time and a half. I think it said something about 30 hours (I was wondering if I'm guaranteed 30 hrs.) Dont think it said anything about shift differential..would it of? I think she said Tuesday at my physical they will give me my benefit package (maybe they will tell me then?...its not at the hospital) It would be every other weekend.
