ICU Nurse Help!

Specialties MICU

ey everyone!

I have been working 6 months on a Trauma med/surg floor and I decided to move on because I am not being challenged and am, quite honestly, bored. I want to be a flight nurse so I applied for the ICU and was asked my first choice between STICU, MICU, and CTICU. I picked STICU. Unfortunately, they do not have an opening and offered me MICU. I was given the option to start MICU or wait 6 months and start in STICU with the commitment of at least 1 year in the home unit. I was heartbroken because I LOVE LOVE LOVE trauma. BUT I also recognize the learning opportunity as a future flight nurse to work with medical patients. SO opinions? Should I wait it out bored in my current position for STICU or take a year in MICU before going to STICU? TIA!!

I think if you have an opportunity to go to MICU now, take it. The opportunity to start in STICU in 6 months may not materialize and you will be sorry.

Specializes in MICU.

I work micu, so I'm biased, but I think you should take that. Medical pts are very complex and you'll learn a lot about disease processes (sepsis!!) and managing them. You'll have ACLS down as well.

Go to CTICU!!! In my humble, but very experienced opinion, the skills you learn in the CTICU will carry you through ANY other ICU that you may come upon. Nurses from the other ICUs in my hospital NICU, SICU, MICU, CCU have a difficult time floating to our unit due to the acuity and intensity of our patients and on the flip side when my coworkers and I float to other units, it is a much easier adjustment.

But to answer your question, take the MICU position now because you know that you have it. The other position might not be there come 6 months time.
