ICU? Don't have to ask me twice...

So I've been a Murse :lol2: for 9 months, and I do love it. Some nights are harder than other but that's how this nursing business goes, and to all the new grads out there. Ya gotta learn to improvise, overcome and adapt. I can honestly admit that I was a bit disillusioned about nursing, and they glorified the crap out of it in nursing school, but I've survived this far. Either way...My first 4 months started out extremely rocky...I was essentially forced to resign out of the first hospital i was working at, then I was able to (And I have to take god for this) find a new job at local catholic community hospital where the NM gave me a second chance at this whole nursing thing. I've been there for almost 6 months now and I've had many compliments about what good care I give and have gotten these silly award that people can put you in for, when you do something nice or exemplify the values of the hospital. Either way I've been doing really good. So it's been a rough weekend I had a best friend died in a very very very awful car accident and I've just been trying to keep everything together and so far I'm doing ok. So my nurse manager needed to talk to me and wanted to know if i was alright because she had actually met my best friend a couple weeks ago. She was nice and gave me this friday off and she also asked me if I finally wanted to move 'inside' into the ICU. And of course I said Yesss !!!!!. This has been what I wanted to do since I got out of nursing school and i've tried to suck everything up and 'pay my dues' as I've been told by everyone and wait for my chance and I now finally have my chance and I'm so excited. So despite this weekend and this week being the worst week of my life. I guess I have something to smile about after all. This morning was the most I've smiled since hearing of my best friends death on saturday night....So I'm super excited !!! Sorry i just needed to share it with you guys !

Congratulation on your new job! Sorry to here about your friend. You are a strong person.

So sorry to hear about your best friend.

However, since you've been a nurse for almost a year now, the ICU is a good move for you. I started off in the ICU, it was not a good time or fit for me, so I transferred to the ER. Had I started off on the floor, I probably would have succeed in the ICU.

At least you have had a chance to develop your nursing skills while working on the floor. That will help you so much in the ICU.

Good luck and I wish you much success!

Great news. Sure sounds like you have good people to work with! Nice that someone actually wants you to succeed, and is willing to sense your needs.

You are lucky to have a caring nurse manager.

Thank you very much. Ya know I wanted to start right out in critical care and I was turned down by the first hospital simply because they were not doing a bridge to ICU/CCU that summer. Was I bummed? Totally. But ya know how they say hindsight is always 20/20. I guess I'm glad things turned out the way they did. Now dealing with everything I deal with when I get floated 'inside' I'm not sure if I would have been able to do all this as a new grad, and try to learn policy and procedure at the same time. I probably would have not succeeded. Thank you for your kinda words and encouragement. During this hard time it really means alot, Thanks.

The place I'm working at now, way more nurturing and helpful than the first hospital I worked at, where you were just a machine and your sole job was to move people thru the system as fast as possible and make the hospital money. If you weren;t making the hospital money you were essentially no good to them. They forced me out and ya know what I'm happy they did because otherwise I wouldn't be on the road I am now. So i guess "Everything Happens for a reason..."(even tho I hateee this saying something because I think it's a clever way to rationalize bad stuff that happend to good people)....

Congrats!! Sounds like an exciting and prosperous

career move:yeah:
