I want to be a nurse, but I have a criminal background from 10 years ago.

10 Years ago I was in a very abusive relationship with a man and one day I couldn't do it no more and fault back. He wasn't seriously injured nor was I, but I still went to jail and the state filed charges on me. I was young and confused and couldnt find a lawyer that would help me plead my case. I was plead guilty due to lack of knowledge and ended with a misdemeanor in assault and battery. This one time in my life has kept me from living to my full potential. My sister's are both nurses and both told me they do background checks. I havn't been in trouble since and I had never been in trouble before that time. How does this or does it keep me from doing what I always wanted to do? Any advice would be very helpful.

I would reach out to an attorney/lawyer or your state BON to get the most definite answer.

If you click on the careers tab at the top of the page there is a drop down menu. There is a forum for nursing with a record. Hopefully you will find the answers you need. Good luck.

Welcome!

The simple answer is yes you can be a nurse...you might have a few more steps but you can be a nurse. I moved your thread to criminal history. There are many nurses who can help you here. This is a moderated forum so you might see a delay in posts/answers. ((HUGS))

I have to same issue, I have two charges both misdemeanors 20 yrs ago. I had a difficult time getting my LPN and I'm hoping it doesn't prohibit me from obtaining my ADN/BSN.
