Ok here goes.... I know what I did was wrong and if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all please. I came here for real answers and help. My husband and I got into an argument April of 2009. I scratched his ear and was charged with 4th degree assault. This is a misdemeanor. They said in 2014 I should be able to get it expunged off my record. So that is not what I am worried about. If I go to school to become a nurse, Would I be able to get into clinicals and would I be able to get my license if I finish before 2014? I am curious if anyone has been through this and actually had a good outcome? I also have a felony charge on my background for theft for failure to pay back a loan over 300 dollars. Will this keep me from finishing school or getting a job as a nurse? Please serious replies only and thanks in advance!

You will need to call your state nursing board and ask them. They will give you the best and most accurate information. In my state if you have so much as a bad check in your "criminal background" you can't get a job with most hospitals.
Thanks for the help :) I will definitely check into that!
If I couldn't get a job in the hospital where could I work? Do I have other options?
I'm not saying you can't but some states are very strict, some are only strict on certain things. We are human too, so yes we can make mistakes. A friend of mine had to get a reckless driving charge off her record before she could apply to our ADN nursing program. Call around and ask. If the state lets you sit for the NCLEX chances are you will be able to get hired.

Hey! I saw your post & I am responding because I know exactly your stance in this. In 2005 I was charged with simple a&b against a boyfriend. In my case I can tell you what happen however, again as others have stated each state is different. I was allowed to go through school as well as attend clinicals. The university I attended did not hold me from graduating but they made it very clear that I would have to have an expungement in order to sit before boards. In 2008 I paid for an expungement which was suppose to clear my background. Well when I did graduate I was able to go before boards because they said my record was clear. When I went to start applying for jobs I was getting turned down which made me a little curious because in some of the interviews I was almost told that I had it....Come to find out all of the governing agencies had not taken it off of the books & even though the city where I received the charge had removed it the actual state hadn't. Each state is different & requires different things. If you have the expungement before you graduate you should definitely be able to take boards without a problem. However you will need to make sure that all of the agencies involved have indeed removed your name as well as from the internet or public index. Also be remindful that some facilities hire there own outside company to do investigations & they sometimes can pull old charges...Again start with your states board of nursing. I don't know anything about the felony because my charge was a misdemeanor but they will be able to tell you!
