I passed my test...now what?

Published

Hello everyone! I just passed the aanp examination as a family nurse practitioner and now I have a million questions. I went to an online school in another state and they are not very helpful. I live in Ohio and want to know how the board knows that I have passed the test. I want to know how to get a NPI number, DEA number, CTP-E number, and any other numbers I am forgetting. Thanks for any guidance!

Your school should have gone over these things with you during the last semester of your program? As a new NP your should get Buppert's book. Another good book for new NPs is Role Development for the Nurse Practitioner by Stewart. Both give good advice.

The first thing that you should do is apply for a license in the state where you want to work. Follow the links below for NPI and DEA.

Congratulations!

Specializes in Adult Nurse Practitioner.

As Goldenfox points out...these should have been gone over in your program during the final class. I was introduced at the beginning of clinicals to start looking and then again the "nitty-gritty" during my last class. You will need you NPI number for most things! When you took your exam, did you not opt to have the results sent to your state BON? If not, you will need the verification letter to include with your application. Your BON may have additional information that can be useful in the beginning stages.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

I would first obtain a job as my job provides a credentialing person that does all licensing, credentialing at facilities, NPI, DEA, etc and the practice pays for all of it too.

Best wishes.

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

Rule on Advanced Practice Registered Nurses Primary Source Recertification Documentation

If you are an advanced practice registered nurse, your certificate of authority (COA) is current and valid only if you meet all requirements of the Board including maintaining certification or recertification by the applicable national certifying organization. Please refer to the 'Nursing Practice' page of the Board's website for a list of Board approved national organizations.

Effective February 1, 2011, the Board requires primary source verification for advanced practice registered nurse national recertification. For this to occur, you must request that your national certifying organization notify the Board directly of national recertification within thirty days of your recertification. The Board no longer accepts documentation of recertification from a COA holder.

If you have any questions, please contact the Advanced Practice Unit at [email protected] or (614) 466-6180.

You can apply for NPI number yourself to speed up process for obtaining DEA, insurance company provider#'s etc. Hiring group/facility credentialing staff will assist + employeer usually pay fees. NPI will need to be updated to include practice address one positions secured + updated each time you change practice locations.

Best wishes in this new role.
