I have ONE petty theft charge need some advice!

Published

So in 2014 I got caught stealing one thing of make up from a store and got caught.. that's the one and only time I've ever been in trouble.. it was a misdemeanor dropped to a violation petty theft! My question is this.. has anyone ever been through this and if so did the BON grant you your license? I'm literally freaking out cause I'm afraid this one stupid little charge is going to ruin my lifelong dream! I will have a decision on 05/20/2016.

It could go either way. One petty theft charge as a very young person is likely to be forgiven, but yours is fairly recent which is a strike against you. Have you already graduated from nursing school? If you haven't, the charge could keep you out of school /clinicals. And if you have graduated, that means you were shoplifting while in school ...not good, either way. I hope you had a lawyer help with your application.

I went through an LNA course which was a 5 week course so no I was not stealing while in school. Yes I finished and graduated without any problems and the person who runs the program told me I more than likely would be okay with the board of nursing. I just wanted some input on this from someone who has been through or knows someone who has been through this. I realize it was a short time ago.. I had some issues back then with substances and have since overcame that and been in active recovery for 11 months.

No I do not have a lawyer to help with my application. I did however call a lawyer for legal advice and they too told me I should be okay.

My apologies, I thought we were talking about a nursing license. Hopefully your lawyer and the person who runs your program have given you good information regarding the petty theft ...and hopefully the substance abuse won't be a hurdle, either. With nursing, it certainly can be- even if you're not a current user. Good luck to you.
