ok, so i just found out that i am not starting nursing school this fall, bummer. but now that ive been thinking about it, i am starting to become interested in a surgical tech program thats in my area. and i feel like my personality might fit better in that area of healthcare instead of nursing. so now i am trying to figure out, if i should go ahead and do the surg tech program, or should i finish getting a degree since i am almost half way there. the surg tech program is only a year. so im trying to decide if it would be better to do the surg tech now and if i wanted to, to go back and have that pay my way to finish my degree, or should i get a degree now and then go back and do surg tech. its so confusing and everyone is giving me different advice. and how do you know if surg tech is right for you. i can watch all that stuff on discovery health fine, but i dont know it kind of makes me nervous about doing it in real life. any advice would be greatly appreciated!! thanx

I know all about those conflicting feelings and ideas about what you should be doing - I constantly feel that myself! My first thought was maybe you could find a way to shadow a surgical tech to see if the job is for you? I know you can do that with nurses and nurse practitioners, why not with other allied health fields? You might not be able to get right in the operating room, but this will get you a lot closer than you are now and that could help with your decision.
Good luck!

See if it's really what you think it is; walk a mile in the shoes of a Surgical Tech. If it lights you up on the inside, follow your heart...the rest will come.

I completely agree. I am currently a surgical tech, I wouldnt trade what I have done and seen for anything. Its great experience and its a great job, but I would reccommend maybe job shadowing. Good Luck in whatever you decide.

Here in Dallas they have a 3 month program for RN's to get certified as a surgical nurse. If you like surgery, and still want to be a nurse you might see if they have a program like that in your area. Sort of having your cake and eating it too.
Great idea!

Go for it! You also have to consider that you could get into the program on your next try. I did not get in for 2 years and on my 3rd try i was #5 in waiting list. Now I am almost done! If you have to wait one year you can take advantage of this and go for the other licence, you have time later to finish the other classes.
Good luck !
thanx everyone for their help. i am pretty sure that i am just going to do the surg tech program, that way i can get working and start making money. and if i still wanted to be a nurse i can always try for nursing school later. and that will give me alot of extra experiene also. i am just trying to really think long and hard about it since its a private school and very very expensive..which sucks alot.

Have you looked into the field and seen if there are job openings for Surg. tech? What if the field was pretty full and you took the course and couldn't find a job? Then you have an expensive bill for school and no job to pay for it and a wasted year.... Check to see what kind of openings are in your area.
good luck with your decision!
