I NEED MAJOR HELP PLEASE! Scared of needles

Published

I am starting nursing school this january. I got 3 immunizations yesterday. I watched closley so that I can learn from the nurse how they are administered. She gave me the first 2 shots. I felt fine. When she was about to give me the third shot I had a vasovagal reaction and passed out. Am I going to have trouble being a nurse? Can I overcome this??????

You had the vasovagal reaction because you were on the receiving end. Don't sweat it, like everything else, you will get used to giving injections as well. Good luck!

There is a difference when you are the recipient of a shot as opposed to giving it. You may not have a problem giving others shots. Work with your instructors and talk to them about this. I don't think your really going to know if you will have trouble giving others shots until you have to give one.

My best friend in nursing school did the same thing the first time she witnessed a lab tech draw blood. She went all the way through nursing school with certain situations that made her queasy but she never passed out again, and she never gave up. As long as you keep strong, and you are certain that this is what you want to do, put on your game face and forge on with each new situation. You will do fine, don't worry about it.

Hey Akerdonn

When I was in BasicTraining at Lackland AFB in Tx, as an 18yr old bullet proof fool, I volunteered to give blood. The incentive was that you'd get 1/2 a day off--and I imagined myself with a 12hr nap. God, that sounded wonderful.

The pretty young gal put the needle in my arm as I sat in the classroom desk. My arm was stretched out over the little area where one could write in a lecture, the blood drained down to the floor where the collection (by gravity--this was 1964) into a bag could be seen. I watched the blood slowly engorge the bag. My mind was inclined to think of a tick on a hound.

Suddenly I heard this strange noise. It was impossible!! A hallucination!!! But I thought I heard my own blood sucking down a drain with a SSSSucking noise. The room began going round and round.....

Next thing I knew, I was being picked up off the floor by 2 or 3 of those 'pretty young gals'--to the horror of a macho 18yr old hero. "Are you OK, Airman?"

Our brain does this to us, Akerdonn. You'll get used to it, or get over it, and there's really no difference.

em even after 26yrs as a nurse I still have problems having injections... and I have only fainted once seeing one given (I took all the bed curtains down with me and have never lived it down) I hate having blood taken because they usually have to canulate me.. I have no veins to speak of! I cant watch surgery.. except eye surgery....! But I have no problems giving injections.

I think it depends who is on the recieving end.. as long as its not me I am fine!

Karen

I never watch when I get a vax, or IV, or have blood drawn. I also often actually squeal a bit when given painful injections. (Ah, but I hold still) I am fine to do all those things to someone else. It really is different- thank goodness!

Forgive me for laughing:lol2: ..the visual on the curtains going down is too real...

I hope you didnt get hurt..:kiss

I give shots at work all the time and enjoy it. When I had to get a Tetorifice injection (and a fellow worker, who is also a good friend of mine, was giving it to me) I had to do some deep breathing...giving shots and getting shots are two different things...plus, three shots at once....
