I need a little guidance

I recently changed locations but with the same company. The position has the same title but at this location the duties are different. I work within the military base daycare centers.

I stated to an employee that I hadn't used my stethoscope since coming on board and it was weird. I used it all the time and my nursing skills at the previous location. This person went on to say that the nurses couldn't use it because they weren't under a doctor's supervision. Um I'm a nurse and have my own scope of practice that includes a nursing assessment.

I found some thing today that could be the reason they think this way. It stated Nurses DO NOT perform medical procedures. My question from you guys because I feel like I'm crazy but a normal nursing assessment is not considered a medical procedure? Also, if there is an order for medication then the doctor has authorized a trained professional to carry out the order.

Please shed some knowledge if I am wrong. I'm so confused.

Do the children with inhalers have doctor's orders for their use?

If a child at my school needs to have an inhaler at school, then I must have doctor's orders telling me when/how often/how many puffs, etc.

Without orders from the doctor, the parent must come up to school for the inhaler administration.

Yes. State Health Law requires an order. And signed parent permission.

We have to have parent permission, but the pharmacy label counts as the doctor's order for us. I can't imagine having to get the docs to fill out more paperwork than they already do. As it is now, it takes me forever to get medical management plans filled out and returned.

Oh, trust me, it is a HUGE PIA. Parents often don't understand that the order must be written out and signed by the provider.

Wait, what?

We're allowed to use a doctor's stethoscope??

Don't be telling that bimbo on The View!!!!

Yes I have everything needed to give an inhaler, Benadryl, Epi Pen etc. We can't give or apply anything without a doctor and/or parent.

As a school nurse in the civilian sector do you have a Doctor as your liaison or overseer? I feel so confused by what the other nurses did or said before me that I'm questioning myself. They told the supervisor that they couldn't treat the children out of fear that they would lose their license because they didn't have a Dr. over them. The past nurses were Master's prepared so I'm not sure if that even makes any difference or they actually just wanted to do the education piece and not clinical. Although we do not work in a facility and have a doctor, each child that has a medication has an order from the Dr. so we have guidelines. Also, if a child were to fall, bump their head etc. I would do my assessment, call 911 (no one is charged unless they are transported) and the parent. I know some have already answered but does it sound like they were pulling some one's strings or were they right in a way.

TIA
