I need to do some intro Biology self study

to help prepare me better for A&P. I'd rather avoid taking an actual course due to 1) money and 2) time. Money primarily. I've got about 8 weeks to study on my own before Spring semester starts.

Any recommendations for a good textbook? Hopefully I can buy an older edition off of half.com or ebay.

Any specific topics which will really aid me with A&P? Any specific topics which will aid me in Micro (once I get that far)?

I found out what book we were using by going to the school book store, then bought it off amazon. Most A&P books come with a cd, thats why they cost a little more. I reviewed the cd, along with a couple of my animation biology websights, to review cell structure. That's probably what you'lle start with, and your teacher will expect you to already know the basics, since it's usually a requrement that you take bio100 first.

Get your AP text book and try and study IT on your own, most text books have websites too with quizes etc... there is an AP folder lists tons of helpful links, my text book website is great I'll give you the link. But I would so just get whatever text book you are going to use for AP (save you money of buying extra) and just do a few chapters. If you know anyone at all taking AP now at your school find out what the syllabus is. Sometimes these are posted online under your schools website. This way you will know what they will start with. Most AP1 courses do start with organization of the body, and chemistry then on to Cells. Some differ in how they do this I have taken 2 so far and this has been the order for both.

Any old High School Biology book or College Intro to Biology books will do for review....also google the web, tons of info is available on ask.com

You may also reveiw some basic Chemistry while you are at it....have fun!!!! Good luck!

I already have my A&P book (and have begun going through it and my labs), it's just that it's review section on general biology is rather condensed. Chemistry I have down; just finished up that course.

Look at a used bookstore, or even the older editions of books on amazon/ebay. They're usually MUCH cheaper, since students generally need one of the newest editions. If you're just using it to review, I don't know why they wouldn't be perfect - very little changes over a few years.

specific topics:

-basic chemistry (lewis dot structures, valence electrons, ions and bonding)

-organic molecules (proteins, carbs, lipids & nucleic acids) and how they are made (dehydration synthesis) and broken down (hydrolysis)

-basic cell structure (cell wall & organelles)

-cell metabolism (how does it generate ATP? glycolysis-Kreb's (TCA) cycle-electron transport chain)

this should give you a running start in both A&P and Micro. :)

There is a great website that has online course content to help prepare people to CLEP varioius courses. There is extensive content available for General Biology, equivalent to an introductory biology class you would take before A&P at freeuniv.com.

The other thing you would want to do is look at the first few chapters of your A&P book-- it will probably have a few chapters devoted to chemistry, cell structure, organic molecules and protein synthesis. You should know that stuff cold if you before A&P.

only because its the book required for the course I have taken

It comes with a lab manual for cat dissection, includes full detailed images of the sheep brain dissection, and all the other slides inbetween
