I am preparing interviews for the new graduate program in NZ and Aus. Since i have never been through any kinds of interview and i am a very nervous person, i am really worried. Can anyone who got into a new graduate program provide me some questions that they have been asked before?? It will be really appreciated!!!
BTW, can experienced nurses help me with this question?? Thank you!!!
During your shift one of your patients becomes unwell, requiring a lot of your time. Describe your actions including how you would re-prioritise your workload to best manage the situation?

I'm a nurse from the Philippines with 1 & 1/2 yrs of experience... I know I'm from a different country, but I guess, we pretty much have the same theories in nursing our patients.
It's hard to answer your question, since it's not very specific. But I guess the general answer I can give you is: address the immediate problem presented on the patient and once the patient is stable, go address your other patients or finish the rest of yor work. Once you are done with everything else, you can go back to your 1st patient to reassess thoroughly and give the rest of the interventions to achieve your patient's long-term goal.
An example is: When your patient's IV Catheter was accidentally pulled-out, you go to the patient to stop the bleeding and put a dressing, then you finish the rest of your workload to other patients that needs immediate care also, then go back to the 1st patient and re-insert the IV Catheter. Since inserting the IV catheter might take a while, you'll have to postpone it for a awhile until your sure that your other patients are also stable. If however, the IV cath is needed for the immediate care of the patient, you address it first or ask help from your co-workers.
I hope I've helped, even just a little.

hi i got the same question for my interview. In NZ they are big on delegation and team work. So your answer would be telling them you would delegate your other patients out to other members of your team and attend to your pt. You must also mention that you will communicate with your team members re the other patients and make sure you thank them for all the help they have done.

Hi I just finished my grad year..I agree wiht the above answers..as being emphasized to us all the time attend to your sickest patient first, but prior to attending to them just inform the Incharge (NUM or Anum) that one of your allocated patient is requiring your time and that if someone can help you with your other patients. besides the incharge should be aware of that anyway. So the point of that question is, don't be a super nurse. Ask help when you need it. Other reason for asking you that question is to know if you're a good team player and if you know how to seek help if needed and know how to prioritise your patients' needs..goodluck on your grad year.:)
Hey, thanks a lot! You guys are awesome! Apart from that specific question i asked, can anyone provide me with some other questions they have been asked during the interview?
as far as i can remember they ask me... that after the handover you went to your allocated patients and one of your patients is lying on the toilet floor. what are you going to do??another one, what would you do if one of your patient is having chest pain??do you want more?? what if you're behind in giving the morning meds, what will you do?? these are just some of the questions..i would say the questions are common sense but what is nerve wrecking is the interview itself. however interviewers arereally nice people that they will let you feel relax first..so far i went to 4 different interviews but all nice people..when are you starting your grad year?? all the best.. hope to see you around the hosp soon..eastern health melbourne.
hey, thx a lot for your questions. I am still doing my last year of nursing, so will not start my graduate year until 2011. I am just using my summer holiday time to try to prepare some interview questions in advance.

Hi,
From my experience, the interview for GNP was not really hard. You will not be expected to answer the medical/nursing procedure or action as you are a graduate nurse. However, the interviewer will want to know whether you are a good team worker or you know the scope of nursing(what you need to do, what you should not do-boundary of nursing). The questions will be mostly about your thought or attitude to nursing practice.
This site has some tips for interviews as well as other informations. I hope it helps.
Cheers,
hey, thx a lot! that website is really helpful^^
