I need guidance--can any of you wonderful nurses help me?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi,

I am currently in Nursing School-junior year. I have to drop out because I've run out of money to pay for this crazy private school. What should I do? I am thinking a community college-but the ones in NY are very strict. Science did not come easy to me-so I had to take A&P twice-and the community colleges around NY say that will be counted against me-meaning it will be not likely I will be able to get in. I am confused. Should I do an LPN program then? It's not as expensive as a $40,000 private school. Are there online associate RN programs that I can do that you guys are familiar of that are great? I mean, I have so many credits its ridiculous. Please.... help? Thanks :-)

no such thing as an online adn.

if you want to be a nurse and don't care what kind, it sounds as if you'd be more successful as an lpn. maybe after a few years of it you'll be more able to put the kind of work into studying the hard science needed to be an rn, and you can think about an accelerated program then.

Not that I'm trying to encourage debt. But your in your junior year at this point I think I would just continue on and take the debt. If you have to go through a different BSN program and you have to start as a sophomore you are still going to pay a lot for that extra year. In regards to the LPN option you will maybe pay less for school but make less money in the future so it might even out. Have you looked in to perkins loans or getting a NA job that does tuition reimbursement to help with the cost.

You need to re-think your career goals. You will need to be proficient in A&P. In NY, LPN's are being phased out in hospitals.

I would really caution you before throwing in the towel in your junior year -- you are so close! Get with your program's advisor and see what help is available to you and also consult with the financial aid office. During my program, our Allied Health department helped student pay rent, buy groceries, etc. And when we had our pinning ceremony, the extra money we had fundraised was donated back to the program just for that very reason! Explore all of your options and don't make rash decisions when you're emotional. Good luck!

Can't you take out a loan? I agree- I mean you're in your junior year here. It's going to cost money either way you go- I'd just bite the bullet and finish. Of course, I don't know your personal financial situation either- my husband lost his job during our 3rd semester out of 4 of nursing school, and I finished the program still...yes we were in a dire situation by the time I got a job, but I can say it was entirely worth it.
