World Canada

Hey guys, hope everyone is doing well.

Am a fourth year nursing student in Africa and I want to work in canada in the future. What I want to know is, what is a newly graduate nurse suppose to do after moving there? I mean what steps should I have to make? And which pays more, a nursing home nurse or a hospital nurse in canada?

I would be very glad if any of you would answer my questions.. Thank you

Assuming you have already established a way to immigrate in the country, you need to contact the college of nurses for the province you wish to move to for an evaluation of your education.

You'll have to complete a certain amount of complementary education for RPN/ RN before you are eligible to write the NCLEX.

Expect a long and pricey journey before you are able to work as a licensed professional.

Hospitals pay a bit better than long term care.

1. figure out your immigration situation first, since without having a legal status, you really can't do much here even if you have a licence (and vice versa.. a license here does not lead to immigration. They're separate things)

2. look up NNAS and find out how you can get a Canadian nursing license. It will be a lengthy process and likely you will need to do a SEC/OSCE assessment test and then depending on the result you will need to take refresher courses before taking the NCLEX.

I recommend you getting experience in Africa because getting licensed in Canada is a very, and I mean VERY lengthy process. Many people near me are taking at least 2-3 years to get their English scores and waiting NNAS's very long processing times...Refresher course also adds up at least one to 2 years to that process. Having your NCLEX done and over with in Africa could help at the end if you don't want to take another few months at the end studying for the NCLEX exam.

You would start with contacting the Canada Board of Nursing. Find out if your degree is accepted there to apply for licensure.

Best of luck and happy nursing!

Thank you guys, your comments where really helpfull #muchlove

Due to unions, ther is no difference in the pay grades in hospital or nursing homes. If you work in the private sector, yes, nursing homes pay less and there is no protection for anyone working there.
