I am a male nursing student - What Did I Get Myself Into?!?!?

Updated:   Published

I said it. I am a male nursing student. I am scared. At times, mostly all the time, constantly ask myself: WHAT DID I JUST GET MYSELF INTO?!?!?

I am currently working on finishing my Biology courses. I just finished an 8 week A&P-1 class,  I am starting another 8 week A&P-2 course and currently taking a 16 week Microbiology class. It is a lot of work especially with working full-time, being a husband, and a father to 3 kids.

With these 3 biology courses taken in one semester, it feels overwhelming at times but certainly doable. How would this semester's workload compare to a normal semester in nursing school with the nursing classes?

I am starting a 2nd degree BSN program this Spring that is 5 semesters long. luckily the program is a hybrid online, evenings, and weekends and I can keep my full-time job while doing the program.

Males nurses out there, what have your experiences been as being a male in a female-dominated profession? I am already surrounded by girls at home and that doesn't bother me. I honestly prefer to sometimes work with females over males as I find they have better work ethics than most men do.

Why would prefer to choose a profession in which for the rest of your life you will be taken as a maid of a medical doctor? You don't want to be a free man?  Have you ever see a nurse becoming a president of any country or even a director of an hospital?

What? I literally work at a Level 1 trauma center ER where the president of the health system is a male RN who has worked virtually every nursing position at the facility.

Furthermore, nursing is the mob. Physicians don’t run this— we do. When nursing isn’t happy, medicine is scrambling to fix it. Miss me with this.

Congratulations!

That is the answer I was expecting.  I am a male nurse too and I am happy and proud of my profession.  I just asked those questions to assess your mind and and see what you think of who we are as male nurses.

Great! Keep Up!

That is the way I like it....We need more more people like you and like your president there!

Hi NurseBlag!

What do you have? Have you ever been a president of any country or any hospital with your degree as a nurse? If you have even been, please tell me and tell other nurses.

NurseBlaQ (not g) and I'm not a male so what's your point? Nurses aren't stuck "being the maid of a medical doctor" or any of the other nonsense you posted. You have a big chip on your shoulder.

Male nurses get made charge nurse and nurse manager earlier/faster than females, therefore they make more money just like every other profession. ? You'll be fine.

Yep, this.  The leadership on my unit is 2/3 male.  The unit staff is 20% male, including ancillary, 10% if you count just RNs.

Nursing profession is very good for both females and males.  As long as I have been called for this profession, I have to perform it with happiness and pride. Male nursing students, be very happy and proud of the choice you have made.  Nursing is a universal profession, and one the noblest professions we have known, especially in this time of COVID-19.

Again,

There are many alternatives in life. I guess our decision making ability, the guidance we have, our life goals, friends and parents, mentors can help us choose to study nursing regarding of gender.

However, it is never late in life, as days and years pass by, and I realize that I have made a wrong choice, I can still make a U turn, and follow the dreams of my heart.  Life is not just only about money, power, material possession, or leadership; instead, a combination of many factors and simple things that make us happy in every day of our life.

It wasn't that bad, There was some catty non-sense from middle aged LPNs I had to deal with who didn't like some 21 year old making more money than them but overall it probably wasn't much different than working with a bunch of dudes.

In nursing school itself it depending some of the instructors seemed to like guys more and the others were the "how dare you enter in my profession type. But honestly if you keep your head down they'll leave you alone. Most nursing instructor types are sorta weird anyway

This was a decade ago so I assume it is less of an issue now. Except that nursing seems to have taken over social media with "hero" status and ego Tripps are at an all time high so I digress.
