I'm thinking about going into OR nursing after I get a couple years of Med/Surg and feel competant (if it happens that quickly!) and I had a question: How long does it take to learn the names of all those scissor-looking things and clamps, etc? That's what scares me the most because there's so freakin many of them!!!:uhoh3::uhoh3:

I can't believe they even make you scrub!! Our nurses DO NOT scrub and most of them have no clue about our job. That's cool that you get to do both.

Don't worry... any good OR will make sure you get the education you need, from instrument names to where the coffee is! Our program starts with you working in central, actually putting together instrument sets, with books that give pictures and names of the instruments, and what is in each particular set. Then you work closely with the OR educator and your preceptor (yes your "personal trainer"

in the OR, you will learn to scrub and circulate as an OR nurse. Ir will take time.. but it will be worth it. by the time you are ready to solo you will be prepared! Come to the OR... we need you!

Not necessarily on the scrubbing part. I was not taught to scrub, only to circulate, and I had to specifically ask and get denied at two other hospitals before I finally found one that agreed to teach me to scrub. The trend is going away from RNs doing both because they can get techs for less $$. It's too bad.
