But it's great for convo. Im just curious if I am the only person who gets annoyed with medical shows (although it's fiction) that continue to show us in a negative light - or NOT show us at all. Some of these shows that take place in the hospital, the doctors do everything and when you see a nurse she's rude. There are some shows that do show us in a positive light (I must give credit where it's due), but am I the only one who notices this?

The ones that bug me are the Medical shows that show MD's doing the work of a nurse. A doctor drawing blood....lol, cracks me up everytime. House is the worst for this. Those poor fellows draw blood, to xrays, operate the MRI and CT machines, brain biopsies, spinal taps, give IV push meds, hang fluids. They not only do the jobs of nurses and radiology techs, but they are clearly in a hospital with no MD specialists for more specialized procedures. If someone is biopsying my brain, I want to know that that's pretty much all he/she does.

This is one of the shows that bug me too. LoL! Do they even have nurses its just MDs on their staff? I can only imagine what it would cost to be seen at that facility.

Nurse Jackie and some other shows ALWAYS put their stethescopes on backwards. Drives me batty. Each time they do it I just say "Aren't hearing much, are ya?" lol

Oh my goodnesss! I could not agree with this more! I always wonder why people who are not nurses or are not directly related to a nurse have such a skewed view of what nurses do, well it's because the media portrayal of nurses is absolutely FALSE! Nurses are either being shown as erotic figures or secondary to physicians in all aspects. House is definitely horrible for this, I sit with my family and point out everything that nurses actually do in real life and they are surprised at how much the show are depicted as providing most if not ALL of the bedside care! I know these shows are wildly popular too so it is unfortunate that uninformed people are taking this as the norm. I'm also amazed at how 8 different doctors (or however many different doctors are featured on grey's anatomy) all work on the same unit?? I don't watch the show but this is what I have heard. Really?? There has to be at least SOME bit of reality in these shows. It's actually insulting!!
Ok, so I'm not alone. On Grey's Anatomy the doctors even perform bedside care. LoL! Its hilarious. The one nurse on that show had slept with every intern. GEEZ!!! The other day I watched something, OMG! cant remember what it was, but they literally made the nurses look incompetent. It was sad. I believe things like this could distort our image.

I can't believe you posted this today - I literally, just today, had a patient ask me, in a pre-op phone call, how she could make sure that she had the "same nurse" throughout her entire stay. Pre-op, OR, PACU and overnight stay. I tried to explain that while television nurses work in all hospital areas (on the same shift, yet) that reality is that nurses tend to work and specialize in one area.
Her response? "Well, I know my rights and I don't believe that that many nurses need to know my business. It would be a violation of my privacy. I want just one nurse for everything."
I blame the faulty reasoning and the sense of entitlement on television shows.

YEESH! WoW! Sometimes you dont realize how much impact the media has on our thoughts. That is really sad, well you tried to inform her, but sounds like her mind was made up before she was hospitalized. smh! geez! Its worse than I thought.

Wow.
In that particular case, I probably wouldn't chalk it up to distorted media images as that patient's own warped sense of ... whatever.

Some friends and I tried to create a drinking game based on the inaccuracies in House. It was short lived, mostly because liver transplants are hard to come by.
