I just got accepted into a Nursing Program

Published

I applied for the Nursing Program at Glendale Community College less than a year ago and when I applied, I was told the wait was at least 3 years. Well, yesterday I received my letter from the Health Science Division at G.C.C. and I have been selected to start June 19, 2006. I was shocked because I did not expect to be accepted this soon. The department selects by your GPA in your science classes, which mine was good, not lottery system.

I'm scared ! What can I expect? The two classes I will be taking in June for the Summer Intersession of the Program is Nursing Perspectives and Essentials of Medical Administration which does not sound too bad. The two classes are on Tuesdays so I won't have to quit my job just yet. Then, August 31st the real classes begin and that scares me. I've read so many horror stories from students and even though that will not deter me, I'm still scared. I'm 41 and hope I can do it.

edited out expletive. Please keep language PG13, meaning no 4 letter words. Thanks and good luck.

Congrats on your acceptance!! Get ready to be busy! You can do it! It's not impossible like some people make it sound! You just have to prioritize and look at the big picture, what you will be doing when you finish school. Your summer classes don't sound too intense. A lot of beginning stuff is kind of dull, in my school 2nd semester is the meat and potatoes and the good stuff-med/surg nursing, when you start learning disease processes and signs and symptoms. I have one more year to go, and I guess my advice would be:

Have a good attitude, take one day at a time, put things into perspective when you feel overwhelmed. Don't expect to be able to do everything. Most people can not work f/t and go to nursing school. The people who do, don't usually get much sleep. NCLEX questions and review guides will be your friend once you start med/surg nursing. Get a comfortable pair of sneakers or shoes for clinicals. Show up for class on time and try not to be absent, lectures are packed with important stuff and show up to clinicals, very important. Remember the great career you will have once you finished. I always think I will have it made once I finish school, it's not really true but I will have a really great career with many, many choices and I can get a job anywhere I want!!! Good luck! :monkeydance:

Congratulations, what great news! I'm sure it seems overwhelming and scary, especially since you weren't expecting to start so soon. Quite an accomplishment, considering how tough it is to get into CA nursing programs right now. But it's clearly meant for you to do this at this time, and I know that you will be successful. I wish you the best of luck as you start your new adventure. Again...congrats!! :balloons:
