Ok, I strongly dislike it when 17 year olds come in at 2:30 AM looking for a pregnancy test...hello? Drugstore?
And i dislike it even worse when they come back positive.
And when they bring the baby daddy with them.
Blech!:argue:
WAY TO WORD IT!!! We see this on a daily basis as well, along with the 4inch diamond studded finger nails and gold teeth, 3 cell phones etc. demanding free medication as well. I am tired of it too - when are we going to be fed up enough to elect people who will actually implement change instead of perpetuating the status quo.
It is the ATTITUDE of entitlement that just kills me. That is how these kids are being raised and so it just continues!!
All these people coming in for pregnancy tests, just consider them as job security. Life is Simple.Peace
That's not job security......treating people who abuse the system. :banghead::banghead:My job security is my skills....not the abusers of the system. Can you imagine the care that could actually be given to the sick people who come into the ED for true illness/ailments/traumas.
Someone who comes into the ED to have us test to see if they are pregnant is impeding the care I give to my patients. These abusers of the system feed on the fact that they think they are entitled, just because.
My nursing practice shouldn't be used to test idiots with the same exact test they could buy from the dollar store.....or....go to a stat care for goodness sake....don't waste my time...and my tax paying dollars!
Job security please!!!!

Finally someone who feels the same way I do! I worked in a free clinic and did it ever open my eyes. All colors of skin and nationalities, it didn't matter. And plus they bring their kids too only to pass on their so called "entitlements".
The bad thing is, they don't follow the doctor's order anyway, so why waste taxpayers money? They offered me a permanent job there and I said "NO WAY".
I have worked in the penal system too. They looked at me like a piece of meat, so I quit going there. I was working agency so I got a taste of all kinds of nursing, from IC units, to free clinics, to retarded children whose parents gave them up to the state because they didn't want them, to nursing homes, sub acute care, mental hospitals, but I must say the free clinics bothered me the most.
Their hair and nails were done to the max! Their clothes looked as if they just went shopping, their sneakers looked like they just came from the box!
And we as taxpayers pay for all of that!
My husband is self employed and we don't even make enough to afford health insurance. I don't nurse anymore, I quit to help him in his business. But I still remember those days. Its just sickening.
Just today I met I man who is supposed to be a disabled veteran. Bull! He gets around just like I do. Except I have epilepsy and totally deaf in my left ear. I don't get any compensation. I was born this way, so? But he gets free everything from the government.
Our government wastes so much money on these no good people!

I look at those patients as "Inbetweens" aka the stuff that comes in between major patients. They just keep us occupied until the good stuff rolls in. If it wasn't for the ER most would not be able to find treatment elsewhere. Do Not Blame them , blame the system we have, and elect someone who can fix it.
You just cant sit on your rumpus in between MIs and GSWs and Strokes.
got to keep busy.

at our er we keep busy with enough true ailments/illnesses/traumas that we get frustrated with the abusers of the system...... coming in for lice treatment while your cell phone, beeper, cigarettes, nike shoes and coach purses hang off of them.....when you say you can't afford rid is abuse....and as far as i'm concerned......they can wait in the triage area for hours....it's abuse plain and simple. i do blame the system....but at some point the people who knowingly abuse need blamed too. it's a copout if we think they can't find treatment elsewhere.....over the counter at any pharmacy would treat their ailments....so, i will blame them, they know they can get tylenol at the dollar store, or a pregnancy test or even rid.........these are the same folks who call 911 because they know the squads get back sooner. for those cases.....i have no guilt trucking their orifices to triage.............and then making them wait!!!!! (a long time)

i guess the whole point i would make is that no matter if the cost was $50.00 it's still less than an er visit and really think if ers would charge a minimal fee like $50 people who refuse to buy over the counter medications for their minor ailments would less likely go to the er for them and instead go to the drug store. it's an abuse of the system i feel and abuse of the resources.
