I started an ADN nursing program over a year ago and graduate in May. I have the highest average in class, and I really seem to be doing well. However; I hate everything nursing, I really only started the program because I was bored, and now I feel to far invested to quite. I have to keep telling myself that this is a great job, but in reallity this job holds a lot of responsibility, "crappy responsibility." In addition I feel tremendous pressure from my family, my husband, and my husbands family to finish and work. It's not like I don't already have a BSN from another university, and my husband makes an excellent salary, I don't have to work. I keep hoping that all the pretentious people in class with their over enthusiastic "I love nursing" attitude will be non-existent in the workplace. This is me just venting, but if you have any productive advice or have felt this way I would love a response. However; if you are just wanting to tell me how terrible I am, please keep it to yourself.
The only time I questioned nursing students is when five of them told me they went into nursing school to get away from their husbands and get a divorce. I knew right then and there that nursing was not their true calling. But who am I to judge? I had my reasons for going into nursing. The profession calls us in many different directions, and it's your calling that truly matters.
You have 'mean and nastied' a thin interval of accepted standards on the same page with little regard to the truth. Usually, there is truth on both sides, but the one who speaks harshest the first (not me), is usually 'most' to blame.I just had a class project where 2 ladies decided they were not going to do anything, get all the credit, try to make me do everything, rape me on my participation evaluation, and not give me a chance to do anything about it.
So I got in another group where 2 ladies would just not answer their phone messages and emails until AFTER the project was due. After my 80 hours (in 5 days while working full time EVERY day) of hard work, everyone in the second group got a 95 on the project (because I switched and they were late in project choice, we could not get 100).
My comments were not harsh, but the other side of the coin. What was done to me more than once above was mean and nasty. But the world is a mean and nasty place. It might be more constructive to make constructive comments based on the facts. Once you figure things out hopefully, you will find the 'prescribed' way of acting by avoiding speaking the truth (as mean and nasty as it is) is usually what slave-owner industry wants to manage its corporate slaves: dumb mild obedience
I thought this was to be a support board. The poster which you quoted was being supportive of the OP who was venting. You seemed very derrogatory toward the poster who responded to the OP. I don't know what that has to do with you being treated badly by some classmates. I have no problem speaking the truth, but we would all do well to remember that the truth we speak is "our truth." That said, noone on a board like this should be subject to derision for being supportive. Being derrogatory is just a way of shutting down the conversation.

well said oakbourne
I see your point, this has turned into a debate. She's probably not reading all of the responses. No need to argue with each other, just goes to show how one person can have an affect on the environment. Imagine working with this individual. Yikes.
Did you look at her other posts? For the most part shes consistent in saying shes the top of her class, maybe its because she has a huge head. SORRY! (I couldnt help myself)
I understand this is a support board, and we're supposed to be supportive. Where is the line drawn when someone says they cant stand the positive people in her class? We're supposed to say "yeah I see what your saying, those happy people peeve me too"
Sometimes a dose of tough love is needed. Maybe this person needs to start a new career path, away from people, especially patients.

You are a mean one. I checked all her posts and she mentioned her academic standing only once. I, too, and the only male in the class, was always, and did graduate at the top of my class, although I really mention it, and I, like pretty little nurse to be, hated everything about nursing and the rigors of the course did not help either. It was only after a year that I realised that nursing had not been mine to chose but that I was Called into nursing by a Higher Power. Many of my classmates are nurses today because I encouraged and tutored them. This is my nature and maybe that is only one reason why I am a Chosen One. Like Oakbourne said it is the Calling that counts. Many of us give up good professions, myself included, to enter the profession. Do not be so foolish to believe that the choice was ours to make. Pretty little nurse to be, like you and I, is answering her Calling and it does not matter how she gets there but that she gets there. This is Angle waitng to fly.
God bless her and all of you Angels.
Bottom line really is that nursing is just not a job......you have to like caring for people, along with the guts and blood . You have to somewhat have that "something " to take on the career of nurse. this is not just another career in the office or something. But.....you can choose the specialty and reduce the stressful environ..there is no doubt that the hospital is a tough place to work conisdering the understaffing and more complex and multi diagnosis of much elder patients. The hospital is very slow in accomodating these changes in their staffing and system and yes, the hospital is really the last place you will work. There are all kinds of laternatives, clinic, insurance reviewer, home health, etc.......and more alternatives opening. Keep the RN studies and keep it current ....you never know when you might need to pull it out..to get a descent paying job. Of course wd can improve the nurses pay and benefits, if we all get together and use lobbying to raise nurses status, and be paid more and repected more!
But then that is another issue.

I know we get carried away and shift to another issue so easily.....this is easy to do especially in a heated discussion since the brain just go full gear. We need to be conscious to stick to the one issue....apples adn oranges are easy to mix.

Being assertive, and not aggressive, but coming to the point directly is the quickest way to resolve the truth. Points may be shot down on both sides of the fence, but tangible facts will reveal themselves quickly. Being non-assertive and beating around the bush in unison does little except waste precious time.
Likewise, I was coming to the 'defense' of the original poster who has a right to express her current emotions. Everyone has that right, and others share her experience at one time or another, whether that are bold and truthful enough to express themselves. We should all be grown adults, and are not teaching a preschool class where we are ingraining 'mild-dumb obedience'.
Maybe I picked out what hit a nerve, but the overriding sentiment seemed to be headed toward the way which I defended against. I don't like people ganging up on someone who did nothing wrong but tell their true emotions: something very few know how to do!!
So please don't get upset. It was a voiced opinion against a mob mentality which I think was totally wrong to begin with, and nothing to with you specifically :loveya::loveya:

:yeah:Wow!! well done. I agree and I could not have said it in a much better way. Thanks !!!!
Please do everyone a favor and find a differant area of work. You are obviously not nurse material. Good luck in your future non nursing endeavors.
Ah. And this is what I speak of - everyone suddenly "knows" the OP inside and out based on one post. I guess I'm simply not as bold as to condemn people or make snide comments based on a single outburst.
As I said before, it's a shame the OP didn't choose to vent to those her knew her best rather than a gaggle of holier-than-thou's who make assumptions about her motives, ambition and long-term mindset. It seem most here find it easier to kick her while she's down and angry rather than try to help her back up.

I am sorry if I misread something. I felt you were being derrogatory toward the responder who had defended the original OP. I don't take these things personally but am a bit quick to come to the defense of anyone whom I feel is being derided. I felt like you were participating in "the mob mentality." Glad to hear that wasn't your intent.
