I got a D on my first test. I'm upset, and sad, I really feel like crap right now............
I also learned to almost never change answers, unless you see another question that gives you a hint that what you chose is wrong. I even followed that in NCLEX...(you cannot go back to change, but, you can think deeply about what answer you will choose while remembering rationale for each answer).
I disagree a bit on reviewing ur work!! I review and occasionally change my answers, BUT only do so if I feel confident, if I keep going back and forth, I keep the original answer. Sometimes another question, will answer a previous question, and I always review ensure I didnt put the response in the wrong spot!! You know put the answer to #11 in #12's spot!
As well profs love to grab questions from the small boxes on the sideor "figures" lot of times those"boxes or figures" summarize pages and pages of reading. I always do the questions at the end of the chapter and if ur book came with a CD, use it!!

I agree with the advice about not changing your answers. The other thing is to not read into the question. Also, when I take tests, if I'm unsure about a question, I put a check beside it and go back. The only review I do is to finish the checked questions and run my finger over the page(s) to make sure I didn't miss a spot or blank. I also use my finger when answering the question to make sure that I'm in line with the correct question and blank. Then, I put down my pencil and turn in the test.
I believe the red color works as well. Thank God for air conditioning because for every test I wore an aran knit cardigan that I made myself. Two confidence builders in one since I'd never knitted such an elaborate pattern before and it is red.

oh blove86, i know it's a horrible feeling but don't be too hard on yourself. especially if it's your first test. now you know what to expect & how your school tests and you can use that to do better the next time. and it's true about changing answers. go with your gut , unless you totally misread the question first time around.

Sorry to hear about the grade. It is one test and learning how to take a test is 90% of the battle. I want to share some stress reducers to help you focus when the brain starts to wander or you start to get anxious.
BLUE DOT: Close your eyes. Slow deep breath-- imagine a movie screen that has a tiny blue dot in it's center. Watch it slowly get bigger to fill the whole screen and then slowly return to a tiny dot. Deep breath. Open eyes resume task. Note: You can change the color to a favorite soothing color of your choice. Blues/greens/purples/pinks are historically relaxing hues.
The second method is called SQUARE BREATHING:
Imagine a square and breathe in slowly while following the top line from L to R. Exhale slowly while following the descending line. Breathe in and follow the line on the bottom. Exhale on the ascending line. Repeat.
Square breathing to count of four Breathe in to count 1, exhale count 2. Inhale to count 3. Exhale to count four.
I used to teach stress management ( I was the one who had the most to learn)
I also had my share of learning curve grades. Write your goal on a card and post it --- I post my goals on the bathroom mirror. When I do this I rarely miss my mark. ( An example is I have an A in Biochemistry. My 2008 GPA is 3.2. Yes, this really works.
Get a tutor if needed no one is good at everything
Eat a protein with a good carb. Such as an egg with an apple. Tuna salad. Easy on the java (makes you need to hit the loo mid exam)
Get sleep over late studying. Walk and stretch before sitting for the exam. Persevere and you will succeed.

i am not usually one to stress over test for 2 reasons. i always study, therefore, i am confident that i have studied the material, and confident that the instructor will not be testing me on anything that i haven't been able to review.
i had a test in foundations this past thursday. i had studied for it, and i wasn't worried about it much. just go in and take the test.... well we get into class and the instructor throws us a curve.... "it is an open book test" she says... ut-oh i got this little sinking feeling in my gut, thinking i know what i have studied, and i am confident that i know the material, and that book is going to make me second guess myself........ so, i ask if i can take it without the book, and she looks at me and smiles this "evil" little smile and says of course you can... then i got another sick little feeling in my gut, thinking that she put "weird" stuff on the test. i didn't know what to do.... i went with my gut and didn't use the book! everyone thought i was nuts and everyone used their books,i ended up with a 49/50 on that test... the next highest grade was a 40/50 38/50 is failing.
so of course i am going to say to you.... always go with your gut, and have confidence in yourself!

I going to echo the DO NOT CHANGE ANSWER advice.
But, over studying is what got me into trouble last semester, actually all last year, once I started limiting my study time my grades went up as the material got harder (figure the odds). Now, I was an extreme case as I would put 50+ hours/week into all of the material, and cut to 12-15 hours/week into the syllabus. One grade shouldn't sink you, or any of us for that matter, learn from your test taking mistakes and move on. Also, I'd look on the "Students" page, there is a ton of test taking rules and advice.
