I am going to be fostering a little boy 1 week old that has Pierre Robins sequence. I haven't been able to ask the NICU nurses about his condition because the court has not fully taken custody of him, because he has no release date. I am a new ER nurse. I want to approach My NICU nurses at my hospital to ask them questions. (the baby is not in my hospital) but I do not know any of them. So I guess my question is, as a NICU nurse would you mind another nurse coming to your floor and asking a few questions on a disease process. I don't really know how receptive or how busy you all are in the NICU. This is my first post. if you have any info that would be helpful also. Thank you.

Just go and ask them, no big deal. I am sure if they had a question in your specialty, they would hope that you be as receptive. You are asking about the genetic issue, not about a specific baby.

I guess times have changed since I took care of sick babies! We didn't have to worry about HIPAA, etc., back then. Before we let a baby go home with a foster parent, we did tons of teaching with the foster parent, and made sure they knew what to expect and could handle it. Good luck to you, dear.

Have you had your agency get in touch with the social worker if the unit? We have prospective adoptive parents come in a lot. They have to be with our social worker and we have to cover up any identifying things like crib cards, ID band and chart. Then they can ask questions about the baby's condition if it is already known to them.

Have you done some research on your own? A Google search? There is a lot of info out there. It might help you know what questions to ask when you do meet the nurses caring for the baby.
You may have already done this, if so, I'm sorry.
