All my life there were only two things in this world I have ever wanted to be, and those two things are... A Cometologist and a Nurse! I have accomplished the first one, and now that my kids are both grown and in college theirselves, I decided it was time for me to spread my wings and fly, and to fulfill my dreams as well, So I went and registered and started taking my pre reqs, and the first quarter, I was given 16 credit hours, my classes were.... Math for Meds, A & P, Intro to healthcare, and Medical Terminology. I was so over whelmed, I went to my advisor and she said to drop the Math, and A&P last quarter, so I did.
Well she did not tell me that I would be penalized for dropping those 2 classes even though they were dropped before the deadline date. Well come to find out, when I was in colsmetology school, I had to have an emergency hysterectomy ( i collapsed at school) so I had to withdraw, when I went back I was jsut about finished had only 3 floor hours to go, when my mom became terminally ill, so I had to with draw again.
:madface:Again before the deadline, but now I went to see my advisor to tell her I was ready for the program after this quarter of pre reqs, WHOA! Was I wrong, she said I was not qualified for the program right now, I asked why, she said because my GPA was to low, I did not understand this because I have made deans list EVERY quarter I have been in school, I was FLOORED! I found out that it was because I had not completed those 3 floor hours in cosmetology class, but I have my license in cosmetology. I am so confused. Well, I was told that I am gonna have to take some BS classes until I can get my GPA back up to their standard even though they have documentation that I withdrew for legitamite reasons both times.
I am so frustrated, I want to just give up and say to heck with it, but my husband is putting more and more pressure on me than ever before. I feel like a failure. I see my dream just going straight down the flood pipes. I don t know what to do, I thank you for letting me vent.Sorry this is so long. I feel like such a failure! I have done homehealth before and that just resparked my passion for this type of work, but I am just so down in the dumps right now, I have lost my drive, ambition, and hopes and dreams. Thank you again for listening or rather reading this.

Keep going. I have a friend dealing with a similar situation. She was in a car accident years ago when she was in college. She was badly hurt and in therapy for a long time. She had to drop out of school- and it was after the drop date. Now..she's pulling high B's and has to work hard to get her GPA up to get into the program. Keep at it..you'll get there and it'll be worth it.
Thanks, it just really seems like an uphill battle at times though, the closer I get another brick wall is slammed in my face. But thanks, and I wish your friend luck in her endeavors.

wow, I am suprised that you were given such a full load on returning to college after so long. I am suprised you were told to drop the classes that carried the most wieght when it came to your credit hours. Now you have a "W" on your transcripts. I believe you can only take A&P1 a total of 3 times, and a "W" will count as taking it once. I personally think that what your advisor gave you was bad advice, but I guess only you and the person in question knows the most about your situation. I say shrug what your advisor said off and start again. Don't let this get you down. 12 hours is considered full time status and your advisor set you up with 16!?! Perhaps you can start again next semester with less units. Perhaps take A&P along with another class that doesn't involve formulas or a lot of memorization. Try to strike some balance with your classes so that you aren't stuck with only memorization or stuck with only writing papers all semester. The best thing you can do for yourself is have the conficence to know you can get the grades and seek out positive and good advice. There is tons of advice on these boards. Set yourself up for success. Goodluck.

Oh man, that is very upsetting I could imagine!! My advise...if this is what you want to do, do whatever you need to make that happen!! If you have to take classes to bring that GPA up, do it. I am done with all of my pre/co req's, so I too am pretty much taking BS classes til I get into the program. You'll get there and it may seem like you never will, but you will!!! Hang in there!!!

What you need to do is RETAKE the classes that you got F's in. That is much faster because it takes it out of GPA calculation.

Wow I've NEVER heard of a school that doesn't allow medically valid reasons or family emergencies for a drop. When I was activated in the military to deploy to Iraq I was in my pre-reqs. I officially withdrew and they said it would not be penalized even though it was after drop period all it showed up with is a W grade. I would look at your college student handbook and remember you can ALWAYS appeal the decision.

i completely agree with cherish, being penalized for a drop based on the need for major surgery is bunk. if i were you, i would talk with the admissions and records department and ask them if they have medical leave petitions and academic renewal petitions. many years ago i when i was a new, clueless, student at the local community college, i was in a car accident and left in the middle of a semester w/o even dropping the classes (hence the clueless part). however, a couple years later when i returned i was able to submit proof of medical reasons for leaving (which you obviously had!). the classes still show up on my transcript, but now instead of f's, it says "medical leave".
many schools also offer academic renewal, although the name differs. what it basically means is that you messed up in the past, but have maintained a high gpa ever since. at the community college in my area, once you have had two semesters with a 3.0 gpa or higher, they will deduct the f's from previous semesters from your gpa calculation (one time only), although they still show up on your transcript. at my four-year university, they will do something similar, but only for one semesters worth of bad grades.
whatever you do, i would talk to more people than just the one counselor. i have had some great guidance counselors over the years, but i have also had some that told me things that were completely ridiculous (and directly contradicted by the catalog).
good luck!
:monkeydance:okay, forst off thanks for all the advise. I didnt know there was so much I could do to clear this up. But, hopefull I dont have any F's, I have W's. I was told that was just as bad, But I am gonna do all it takes to do this, because My heart is with helping pople and taking care of people. Every single time I get to the point of just saying to Heck with it, and wanting to just quit, I get sick to my stomach.
I truly feel that this is what I was put on this earth to do. I am just flustered that everytime I try to acheive this goal, I get 2 steps forward and then knocked 5 steps back.
But anyway, I am gonna be checking in on this new info I have gotten from you all, to try to get this straightened out. I mean for crying out loud, I am NOT getting any younger, and my brain cells are gonna start dying. LOL, nah, but thanks again for all your advice and support from the bottom of my heart. You all are GREAT!

You need to look into academic forgiveness-most schools have this where they will eliminate whole semesters from your transcript. Ask your school registrar about it! GL!
