I finally start the journey!!

Published

Hi!

I am a lurker but I decided to come out of my shell to introduce myself and perhaps find some guidance.

I begin my first semester of school at DMACC in Iowa after years of contemplating about going back to school to become a RN. Originally, I graduated in 2012 with a diploma from a for profit in Medical Billing and Coding in Alabama. When I was in my upper wheel classes, they dropped the bombshell that especially in the area I was located, if I was a nurse, I'd have better luck being hired on for a medical coding position. I was disappointed but it started to make me think. I loved Medical coding but I wanted to do something more worthwhile. One of my instructors at that for profit school laughed when I suggested I wanted to pursue a degree in Nursing. She just said I had no backbone and I'm too fragile mentally to consider it (I have slight autism).

The first community college I applied to, I was unable to enroll because I found out in late 2012 I was pregnant so I didn't know if it would be a good idea or not to enroll in classes so I decided to put it off.

This year, we took a chance and came to Iowa and fell in love with the state. I signed up with an AMAZING school and I start my classes May 21st. I'll be taking Intro to Psych (Pre-req) and a remedial writing class because my COMPASS scores were low. I was trying to sign up for a CNA course and didn't know I couldn't just register for it like a normal class. That's okay, I'm waiting till fall semester to take it.

My biggest obstacle at the moment will be psych. If anybody has any study tips or resources that helped them through the class, I'd really appreciate it.

Specializes in Critical care.

Congratulations on starting your journey. And good for you for not letting people with bad attitudes stop you!

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Congratulations on taking the big leaps!! Great job! Wishing you well on your journey!!

Good for you! I can't believe that negative woman laughed at you. Sounds to me like you're going to be fine!

psych, is really fun, if you like mental health, you will be talking about the life span from birth to aging. you will also be talking about freud, erikson, and some other theorist in psychology. There will be alot of information to retain, you just have to stay focus and take good notes, you should be fine..good luck in your journey towards becoming a nurse.

Psychology was ok. It wasn't the "oh my gosh I love this stuff" type of course but I suffered through it because I had to. If you like that kinda stuff and learning about people from "womb to tomb", then you will have no problem. It isn't a hard course if that's what you are wanting to know.

Good luck!!!

Thanks y'all!

I took Psych in high school and the only thing I remember is the section about Pavlov. I think psychology itself is fascinating and some concepts are harder to understand than others but I can do it.
