I feel hopeless...

I've been on my own now as a new nurse in bed side nursing for 2 months and I just don't want to do bed side nursing any longer. It is just not for me. My background includes a BS in Business Management then changed careers and received my ASN. Since I signed up for an "internship program" I have a 2 yr contract hanging over my head. I just do not know what will make me happy in nursing. I'm currently applying to a RN-BSN program but to be honest with you I am so burnt out in school. My husband and I are in our 30's and we're ready to start a family, but I just cannot stop thinking about where my future is heading. Just looking for advice to see if anyone can help steer me in the right direction here ... I just want to go back and work behind a desk again where I felt more comfortable, so something in administrative would work for me but what exactly is what I'm having troubles with. Any advice for a new nurse with a BS in Business and a ASN-RN?? Thanks for any advice. :(

I think you haven't given it enough time. It's only been two months; almost everyone feels overwhelmed at that point. How did you feel when you were on clinical? Did you do well in your rotations?

At this point, you would be very limited in choices for administrative positions, even jobs that are "desk jobs." Really, I would suggest that you try sticking it out for a little while longer. You may feel much differently six months from now than you do right at this moment. Don't make the mistake of jumping ship early then regretting it down the road.

Best wishes!

I agree. Two months out from all that effort & study and you're ready to give up? Two months is nothing and you owe it to yourself to honor your education and effort by giving it at least a year. Of course you're pining for the comfort and familiarity of a desk, but those desk jobs are few and far between and usually reserved for those with experience. My desk job is wonderful, but I only got here by riding on my years of experience. Believe it or not, you might someday have an appreciation for the knowledge and expertise that your time at the bedside gave you.

In your current state of mind, I would also suggest not worrying quite yet about enrolling in the BSN program. Concentrate on getting good at what you're doing.

I really liked my clinicals and I did well ... but our teachers said we were "glorified CNA's" during clinicals, true story. So I spent a lot of time with pt's and their families instead of following the RN around. I truly hope that I'm just having "new nurse" blues here. I literally cry hard at times at home thinking about my future because I just do not have a clue. I spoke with an old high school friend who is in Case Management for an insurance company and she loves it so I'm hoping I can head in that direction.... I love to talk with pt's but it's the critical ones that scare the crap out of me - and that might be because I'm still new. I also work nights ... my plan is to switch to days after one year when I feel like my feet are more underneath me than over my head.

So question about starting a family working bed side nursing ... being pregnant and walking around like crazy and lifting pt's makes me nervous so would love to hear from other ladies that became pregnant during bed side nursing and how your shift went.
