I am curious

I work in Early Head Start as a Health Advocate. I work with children 0-3 years of age. In reading through the policies regarding height and weight I am wondering... I know that it is a big issue.. but at what age do you really make a big deal about BMI and weight? what do I as a nurse discuss with parents, what suggestions do you make to little children? I am not a nutritionist and I feel that the doctor should be the one that makes the suggestion and refers and helps the parent understand... Maybe I don't understand my role as a " school nurse/health advocate"...

Education, education and more education. Learning through play at that age. I would focus on doing parent involved activities/games around nutrition. You can get the point across without being so direct. Also look at your community of families you are working with. What is the need (s)? Focus on that. Refer to provider with concerns but you can definitely educate.

When I worked in primary care peds we didn't even calculate until age 2. Most of the time it was not addressed until preschool age, though. What are the guidelines for you?

That's what I was thinking. Why is it even an issue at this young age when babies are seen by pediatricians on a regular basis.
