Ugh! I just cannot study for my upcoming Chemistry exams. My husband and I are splitting up (he's a worthless loser & cheater anyway) and my step-father was just diagnosed with lung cancer. I obviously don't want to fail my exams, but I've been extremely upset lately. My mind is just completely gone. How in the world can I get my act together here?

I understand how you feel. Two Novembers ago I too, was taking exams in chemistry when my dad passed away from a major heart attack and he was out of state at the time. I was totally blown away mentally. What helped me was to pray, talk with friends. What I am saying is see what kind of support you have and use it. Do you have a close friend or family member you can talk with or just hang out with? Meditate or exercise could help too. Sometimes a really good cry has helped me. Do you need to talk it out or does a distraction work better for you? What are some ways you have coped with stress/ problems in the past? Have those coping mechanisms worked for you?

I was going to school when my father was fighting lung cancer for 1 year. He passed away last september. If you are like me then you will not feel focused on school. My grades suffered somewhat so I took less classes. Its important to not ignore your feelings. BUt I guess you just do your best and worry about what you have control over.

Just do the best you can do. I'm sorry you're going through such a rough time. Best wishes.

If your husband is so worthless, study hard and make your goals to proove to the jerk that you can do it!!!
As for your step-father, would he be upset if he knew that you failed because of his illness?
I realize life can be hard, making it rough to focus on things.
Now, what really matters to you? Do what you need to do to get through this semester, and pass.
Ok, end with the teacher-type lessons...I really hope you are able to cope with life's turmoil, and I'm really sorry to hear about what is going on.

Sorry to hear things are so stressful right now. I know how you feel. I'm struggling to pass my algebra exam, and my mom just called and told me that my dad's doctors told them to contact hospice. He's dying of liver cancer, and it's pretty advanced:(AND someone stole my math book too!
First, I highly recommend having a good cry or two. Make sure you are eating as healthfully as you can (yeah, I know, who feels like eating, but you really need the energy to get you through this). Take a look at what you have to study, figure out how many days you have, and divide it into study units that fit. Make sure you figure breaks into that-if you study too long without a break, everything starts leaking out your ears.
Let the housework and cooking go. We are eating what ever around here (lots of sandwiches). The laundry is stacked up all over the house, and the dishes aren't done. But it's only for the next week for me. I'm saying NO to any outside requests right now, including a relative who wanted to have his family (himself, wife, and two very small children) stay the night here, the night before my exam, so they could save on hotel expenses.
Try not to waste emotional energy fighting with your husband, if you are still in the same house. Go to the library to study if you have to, or stay in your room. You have enough to think about. There will be time to think about the pending divorce after you get your exams out of the way.
If you are religious, pray! Tell God all about how you are feeling.Ask Him to help you with your load.
Try to come up with a positive thought you can bring up when it all starts getting overwhelming. For me, I've made it a goal to pass this test in honor of my dad. I'm not trying for a super high grade, like I usually do. I'm just making it my goal to pass.I think he will love to hear me call and tell him that I passed for him:)
If you feel yourself really tensing up, or start feeling like you're just not going to make it, BREATHE! This sounds kinda silly, but put down your book, get into a comfy position, and just concentrate on taking air as far into your lungs and letting it smoothly back out for awhile.

It must be very hard what you are going through. I just lost a dear fiend to suicide.I was having a hard time getting through my studies.I came across a quote that I now have on a notecard at my desk.
When we consistently give control of our lives to other people and circumstances,we run the risk of learning to give up, even with abundant opportunity around us.
Take Care

If it was the radio, i'd play this song for you.
I'm tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless lost under the surface
Don't know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes
Every step I take is another mistake to you
I've become so numb I can't feel you there
I've become so tired so much more aware
I've becoming this all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you
Can't you see that you're smothering me
Holding too tightly afraid to lose control
Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart right in front of you
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
And every second I waste is more than I can take
And I know
I may end up failing too
But I know
You were just like me with someone disappointed in you
Is everything what you want me to be

Lilac, thank you for your good advice. I'm so sorry about your father! I hope he's not in too much pain. Good luck on your exams and take care.
Thanks everyone! I did get a couple of hours of studying in this weekend. It was helpful to study at my parent's house, since I'm still living with my husband. I can't wait until my tests are *done*. Oh, and getting away from him is going to be great...I'll finally be free.
