I am in complete shock!

omgoodness! i completed my first night as a volunteer nursing student at my local hospital. (i know i may start the ole argument adn vs. bsn. i am sorry for that!) it was horrible how the bsns were treated so much better than the adns. the bsns wore different coats than the adns. why is this? i thought if one passes the nclex, he/she was a nurse just like everyone else!

i also realize that this was one night, one floor and one hospital. but, please, tell me this is not true for all hospitals!

It's NOT true for all hospitals, honest. What do they do w/diploma grads? Waitress outfits?

Personally, I hate those nasty, dirty lab coats--get a look at the sleeves--yuck!!

I have, on more than one occasion, offered to take them home and wash them! One nurse, I actually went online and ordered her a new labcoat. I would have paid for it, too, but she did cough up the $$.

How ridiculous!

Are you sure it was BSN vs ADN issue? Or was it clinical ladder? At some hospitals here, nurses on different rungs of the clinical ladder where different colored jackets. BSN nurses usually come in to a clinical ladder program higher than ADN, and that might be why they were different.

As far as using different coats WITHOUT a clinical ladder, and based soley on degree status? I dont think that is neccesary.

On my floor, ADNs and BSNs do not dress differently. However, the shift supervisors and the clinical manager wear lab coats over their scrubs. Since a BSN is required to be a shift supervisor or a clinical manager, it works out that the only nurses wearing lab coats are BSNs.

i go back tonight, and i will start asking more questions. i asked tuesday night, and the nurse i was working with said, "the bsns were the lab coats, and the adns were scrub jackets." i will try to get a more exact reason.

LOL--can you believe that?

I have never worked anywhere yet (25 years) that ADN or BSN made one bit of difference.
