I am becoming more discourage

more and more people tells me that their are no jobs for new nurses. if you want to become a nurse you have to aim for at least a bsn. asn will have a very hard time finding employment. on top of this people keeps telling me how all nurses hated their jobs and they get burned out real fast.

do you guys hear the same thing?

I think we've all heart that, and when it comes down to it.. nursing just isn't for the faint of heart. :) it takes a special breed to take on all of its challenges and to love it for what it is

Yeah I hear it but I ignore it! Don't let them get you down..keep on chuggin along.

I'm an ADN and a neonatal ICU nurse. I love what I do. When people ask me about nursing as a career, I make sure to tell them about the myth behind the current "nursing shortage."

But... Just a few short years ago, it was much easier to get a job in most areas, even with the ADN. Now there are more new grads than jobs, so hospitals can be picky and require a BSN if they want. By the time you guys finish prereqs, get into a program and then graduate from the program, the situation will probably have changed again. Better? Worse? Who knows?

If you feel like nursing is for you, be brave and forge ahead. Even if you decide to totally change direction later, you'll have a solid base of credits that you can apply toward whatever degree you decide to pursue. Don't let fear keep you from getting started!

follow your heart, I know you still small voice tells you what to do..

that is what I would do. Usually the first and strongest instincts are

those which we should follow. The other thing, is that

sometimes those who start do not necessarily finish, and if

you are going in for the love of human race you will not

hate your job.

The economy is tough all around. I know many new grads in various fields and none of them are finding jobs. I know someone who graduated with an ASN recently and it took her 9 months to find a job but she did.

Thank you guys. I want to go for my BSN but right now the ASN program are very convenient for me. All I need right now is A&P and I can apply for the spring of 2012. My plan is this. If I do not get accepted into the ASN program, Im going to continue school and pre reqs to apply for BSN nursing school in 2013. I really don't care if I look for 9 months before I land a job. If that is the case I can keep going to school or maybe work as an CNA! Right now I work at Macys as a cashier and I am 34 years old. I have been messing around with my life long enough so a few months of job hunting is barely leaves a dent.

Hi!

If you truly feel the nursing is your calling than I think you should go for it! I would arrange to volunteer at a local hospital or ask to job shadow a nurse to see what nursing really entails first. The most common thing I see with a lot of my classmates after being accepted into the program is that they realize that nursing isn't what they thought it would be and they drop out. Others complete the program and then realize nursing isn't for them either. Long hours running around on your feet, lots of charting and paperwork, difficult patients/families, lots of bodily fluids, risk of disease, death of a patient, etc. Nursing can be a dream job if you are truly a person who enjoys helping others, but just remember that there are aspects of the job that aren't always that pretty. Some go into nursing to because they have finally seen what potential they can have in the field, and some just think it's an easy career change with a big paycheck. Nursing is hard work, and can be an expensive education.

Those who truly are meant to be nurses will be. So if it your dream, I would pursue it while you still have the nerve and my best advice is to make contacts through the local hospitals. The truth is that there really isn't any shortage of nurses in most areas, and nurses are graduating by the hundreds every semester in most areas/states for that shortage. So just getting your foot in the door can be hard work as well. Passion and perseverance!

Good Luck!! :) :)
