Hypertension: Worried about nursing school physical

Published

Hi everyone!

I was wondering how strict are the physical exams and what do they consist of for entering nursing school? I'm hoping be accepted in to a So.Cal community college. I know I have to have a check up before starting, what worries me is I have borderline hypertension. As of late my readings have been around 135-140/85-95 ranges. I have just started eating healthier and exercising to lower it because I'd rather not be on medication.

I probably have til December or January to get it in check, so I'm hoping that is enough time. I am nervous though because I've worked so hard to get good grades to be accepted into the program. It would just crush me if I wasn't accepted due to failing a physical exam. Other than the high BP, I am very able bodied and have no doubts that I can perform nursing duties.

Thanks for any advice!

I can't imagine it would be an issue, but maybe ask a representative from the program if you're concerned?

In my experience (FWIW), the school physicals are primarily concerned with communicable disease and your ability to meet the physical requirements of nursing school. Something like borderline HTN would not be a deal-breaker. Are you being followed by someone for the borderline HTN? That's probably good enough for your school.

Best wishes for your journey!

I would work with your PCP in determining how troublesome your recent readings are (not in terms of school but in terms of your health), and what, if anything additional, should be done about it. Personally I have not come across anyone who has been rejected for such an issue.

Best wishes ~

My nursing school physical was done by my PCP. She basically had to sign a piece of paper that said I was physically, emotionally, and mentally fit to go through the process of nursing school. She also updated my immunizations.

An elevated BP will not keep you from entering nursing school.
