Hurricanes wrecking this semester... chime in please

Published

Up North, I guess you guys are used to snow days and blizzard days (the ones that leave you without power for days), so this post may seem kind of ridiculous to you. Down here in South Florida, there isn't much in the way of weather that gets in our way except for the hurricane. We get wind of it when it's about a week away and every day that it gets closer, we get more fixated on the weather news. A couple of days out, if you happen to be in the cone of doom which is something like 500 miles wide, it gets difficult to concentrate on much else. Will it grow, will it intensify, is it another Andrew... You just know that the eye of that miserable life wrecker is going to zero in on your house.

Try to incorporate this into school and clinical. We are still responsible for the material in the syllabus and for turning in our assignments, even if done by candle light. My head is mush for school now. Pure and utter mush. The momentum has been sucked right out of my sails. We've lost several students who have had to drop because they had obviously higher priorities to deal with like finding a roof to put over their heads. Others have been hit by depression.

How are other Floridians who have been visited by these storms managing? I'm hoping and praying that there will be no more of these angry visitors coming our way.

Because of Ivan, when we start back on Monday we will have missed 3 weeks of class. I have no idea how that time is going to be made up. There was talk at one time of just "rescheduling" the semester for January....that would have been ALL the colleges in Pensacola. It's going to be rough...I know that.

The kids have it worse, though. They will have missed about 4 weeks when they start back on Oct 11th. I know that they don't think it's bad but with the FCAT looming over their heads...we'll have to see what can be done. I know that some of the 180 required days are probably going to be waived for Escambia County and they are not getting their fall break.

Jennerizer, I bet we go to the same school. I'm in Volusia county as well.

We missed almost two weeks of class between Charley and Frances. We were originally scheduled to finish the semester around Dec 9. Instead we are just extending the semester an extra week. It's been tough this semester so far. But our teacher has been great. She pushed forward our due dates on tests and projects that fell after the hurricanes. Several students in my class have also dropped the program due to damage to their homes and other related stress.

I look at it like this. I've made it this far, nothing is going to get in my way. I want to be nurse more than anything, so hurricane or not, I am going to become one. Good luck to all those affected by the storms and I hope life returns to normal (whatever that is :) ).

Our class has missed 4 lecture days and 2 clinical days. The school is scrambling to reschedule so that we meet all of the state requirements, which means most of our days off have been resceduled into clinicals or lectures. Oh well... not much we can really do. However, it is making the semester fly by.

Scrambling as well here. There is talk of adding one hour to each clinical day for the remainder of the semester to conform with the NLN accredidation requirements for clinical hours. Lectures are now given at breakneck speed. For the first time in years, I'm using shorthand that I used to use for taking dictation. Except for Thanksgiving day, any holidays we had are now gone. There is no talk of ditching the semester although that was a worry for many of us.

I think we're gonna make it after all.

Between the hurricanes and a death in my instructor's family, we've really only had two full lecture days. Fortunately I think it's worked out that we haven't missed any clinicals but we are behind in them anyway b/c the new students haven't had their assessment labs to learn anything to do on the pts.

We have our first exam next week and like you, we are responsible for the material even though we haven't been taught it, just have to read it in the book. I don't even know what to narrow in on b/c we haven't heard much lecture to know what is most important to our instructor.

Hopefully there will be no more freaking hurricanes any time soon!!! My kids are also all out of whack with their school. Overall I'm just glad we didn't have more damage than we did, some people in my neighborhood had major damage (unliveable houses) with Jeanne. But it will be nice to get back to some normalcy!
