Question for pre-req's. I need to decide on a humanities class..... it's a toss-up between philosophy.. Bio-ethics and anthropolgy..lost ancient cities. If have taken either of these classes, I could use some input! Thanx!

Bioethics will related more. I'd go with that.

I'd go with anthropology but that's just me.

Specializes in L&D.

I took Anthropology but Bio-ethics might be related to nursing more. I believe I chose Anthropology because it's what fit in with my schedule best.

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

I took an Introduction to Philosophy at a university. The class was a hoot! Lots of class discussions. We had to learn the basic philosophies of the greatest philosophers ("I think, therefore, I am"). We also had to read a little book called The Meno by Plato. It was written as a conversation between Plato and Socrates, I think. and it's theme was: what is virtue and can it be learned? We spent 6 weeks reading and discussing it. I have talked to others who took Philosophy and had to read one of these old philosophical works by one of the ancient Greeks and discuss it. Philosophy majors are the bullshitters of the world, but they sure are fun to be around! If you like talking and expressing an opinion, take philosophy and have a class that is at least a little bit of fun and stimulation.

I took cultural anthropology and I thought it was really boring. It was fun though-I met my best friend and we got to talk about tribes that wipe green snot on their hand and sling it at you they don't like you. (much like patients unfortunatly)

I loved cultural anthropology! I love seeing how groups 'tick' etc. Never did run across the ones throwing snot...might not have liked that lecture too much :)

Definitely Bioethics. Its interesting, related and some schools even require it for nursing program. Good luck.

I would take Bio-medical ethics because in my nursing program it's actually required. Also I took philosophy(2 courses) and I found it quite boring to tell you the truth:chuckle Maybe you should find out what the nuring programs in your area require because now to think of it philosophy was also required. You might end up with taking a couple(2-3) humanities. Good Luck. Im taking Bio-med next semesters.

Hi. I haven't been on the AllNurses site in FOREVER, so I figured I *might* try and get back in the 'swing of things';) :p. I also agree with taking the philosophy (Bioethics) course, primarily because it relates/ties into nursing. That's just me though--and also, because *I* like ethics/ethical issues/dilemmas, etc. I took TWO philosophy courses: Philosophical Issues *and* Introduction to Ethics (I'm at a community college), LOVED the Ethics course, and liked the PI course OK--it was a little too 'deep' for me, but the instructor (GREAT guy!:rotfl: :chuckle :p --ironically enough, also had him for Ethics too) didn't 'preach' anything/throw his views or anything on us. They were both good courses--we watched 'The Matrix' in PI, and 'Dead Man Walking' in ItE. I still wish we had a Medical Ethics/Bioethics course or something along those lines--*THAT* I'd REALLY have LOVED! Oh well... . There's also another philosophy course (I think it's the ?History of Philosophy? or something like that), but I've NEVER seen it offered, and I've been at my college since 2001--went RIGHT out of H.S.

So...I'd go with the philosophy course...lastly, I also wanted to mentioned that MY college also has Cultural Anthropology (and other Anthropology courses and overall, they're not very popular:rotfl:/don't seem to be).

P.S. I guess with PI, I had a preconceived notion that it would be ALL about religion and whatnot and well--it wasn't/wasn't what I thought it would be; it was rather quite interesting! I still liked ItE more...that's more my 'cup of tea';).
