Published

I am a nurse student ,I study a lot ,even though I find some difficult question for my classes,so please if you can help me with some usefull information I apreciated.

Thank you;Batsh

In what way is a bone similar to a corked bat?

What advantages and disadvantages does this provide as opposed

to a bone that consisted only of compact bone?

We are happy to help with homework, but we won't do it for you. These kinds of questions are to make you think.

Tell me why you think and we will go from there.....think about how does a corked bat workand, what does is do...... why this is an advantage in the human body.

Here's a diagram...

Personally, I think that isn't a fair question as it assumes knowlege of the sport of baseball.

I agree with this if it were on a test for the first time, but a quick google search of a corked bat explains what it is in detail and you can compare it to a compact bone, for a take home worksheet wouldn't be too bad of a question since you can look it up...

I think it's actually a pretty clever question, and a good one to get students to think critically about human anatomy. Basic knowledge of what a "corked bat" is is pretty common (shoot, I know and I don't even care about sports), and it's easy to look up if someone doesn't know.

In baseball, a corked bat is a specially modified baseball bats that has been filled with cork or other lighter, less dense substances to make the bat lighter without losing much power or strength...how does this give an advantage to bones like the femur.

Hint: What's "cancellous bone" and where do you find it?

I think the faculty member who thought this up should get a prize. Here are two unfamiliar things for students to research and think about. What a great way to get them thinking about things in a way they never did before! This, ladies and gents, is a skill that far too many new grads never had a chance to practice in school.

It definitely makes them use some lateral thinking ........I think it's brilliant!
