Hubby has to go for a Stress Test....

Published

Hubby just went last week for an Upper GI...

SX: Almost constant heart burn (spicy foods make it worse) and pain right below his sternum.

The Upper GI just came back normal, and Dr wants him set up for a stress test.

Now hubby is completely worried about his heart. Blockage runs in his family, and he's terrified about possibly having to have a stint put in.

What other S/S should I look for?

Any words of wisdom for this ol' married lady as to what to look for with her hubby?

Thanks folks....:o

Be on the lookout for nausea, sweating, possible back pain, shortness of breath. Of course if you see any of these things or he complains of them CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!!! And don't lethim talkyou out of it, as males love to deny pain much to their own detriment. Good luck. Praying for you.

Hi!

I think his symptoms point more on the GI system. The doctor would just want to rule out a heart problem. A normal upper GI doesn't mean there's no problem with the GI. Gastroesophageal reflux and Gastritis can't be diagnosed with an upper GI. Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee, and spicy foods. Don't sleep with his stomach full, wait for an hour before sleeping. Small, frequent feedings is important.

With a family history of a coronary heart disease, he should decrease on the cholesterol. A regular follow-up with your doctor is very important.

:)

Yup, not a definite heart problem. I had chest pain and it turned out to be esophogeal spasms. I went through the cardiac workup but not catheterization as the stress test showed nothing except a lot of sweating.

:nurse: My dad had the S/S you described for years and was treated for a hiatal hernia (he thought he was always having a heart attack). He has had all the test done including an EGD, US GB, stress test, heart cath. I asked the Doc if he found the Golden Arches in there? The Doc told him he had a heart of a 20 year old and it was his hiatal hernia. At the age of 59 he has a medical hx of numerous diagnosis. He has not went for any stints or open heart (yet). He recently had a stroke and is up and about (unbelievable to the Doc), but he has decided to eat right, quit his cigars, and exercise. I will say a prayer for ya'll and God Bless You in this new year.

Moho

After the test he will have peace of mind. Either it won't be his heart or if it is then he could possibly have coronary interventions to correct. All of this is better than having an MI. You don't get the heart muscle back once it is damaged.

I agree with the others, don't freak out over a possible heart problem. I suffer from GERD, it's not fun, I have pain all over the place--heartburn that radiates out throughout sternum, up to throat, and to my back. Before I was diagnosed I was put through all the heart tests, too, to r/o any heart problems. It was finally diagnosed through an endoscopy. My upper GI was also normal, no hiatal hernia or regurgitation.
