2012-2013 HRSA Nursing Scholarship Application

Published

The application process hasn't even started yet but I didn't even find out about last year's scholarship until a couple days before the deadline. I did get my application in on time but was not fortunate enough to be a recipient. I intend to apply again for the upcoming scholarship. Any tips from those that were accepted? My EFC is 0, I'm in an undergraduate program, and my GPA is 3.4.

Hi jnelson188,

Have you have your credit checked pulled yet or received an email? Do you mind me asking where do you live in Indiana? I live in Indy and my credit hasn't been pulled yet. Seems like a handful of people from other states received the acceptance email on August 3rd so I've been biting my nails all weekend :(

No libra 1976 my credit was never pulled and I didn't receive an email on Friday! I live at east Indianapolis.. My other friends who applied that are from Indy never got a credit check either so either they are not done making decisions or we didn't make it as finalist! I'm not sure I'm still hoping!!!

Do they eventually notify people who didn't receive it?

On the website it says those who aren't selected will be notified by Sept. 30th

What school are you and your friends enrolled in? I will be attending Marian University's ABSN program that starts August 20th. However if I'm not a recipient I may not be able to attend. I've maxed out of my government student loans with my 1st degree and pre-reqs at Marian. I even applied for a private student loan thru Sallie Mae but got denied. I don't have the greatest credit either though so I wasn't too surprised. Well maybe they haven't gotten to our state yet, I dunno...

Wow that's ironic we are all in the traditional bsn nursing program at Marian university with one year left all efc's are zero and gpa's from 3.6-3.8!

I'm taking the 16mth accelerated online program since I already have a bachelor's degree. A financial aid counselor did inform me that she knew of at least two students who had once received the scholarships so that was promising to hear. My efc is 00238 so I'm not sure if that means 0 or 238. I have a 3.4 GPA.

Do you think someone with a low GPA (3.1) has a chance of getting it?

Yes one of the females is is my clinical rotation and one just graduated they had gpa of 3.5 and 3.8 and they participated in a lot of volunteer work and mission trips through the university so that could've been an important factor! Well anyhow all we can do is patiently wait as the decisions continue to roll in! Good luck to you and all the rest waiting! Major congrats to all that already received it!!!

For the ones that got the scholarship, I was wondering what type of volunteering you guys did?

I was an AmeriCorps member as well as volunteered at local businesses like the library, hospital etc.

I was selected for the NSP, but I am now reconsidering. I searched on the website for jobs in my area, just to get an idea of what's available. There are zero jobs for nurse practitioners in mental health in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Maine. I'm not sure I want to relocate across the country. However, I'm not sure if the search engine actually reflects what will be available when I am looking for a job next year.

Can anyone speak to the job availability with HRSA? Do they help you find jobs or are you totally on your own? Do more places qualify than are listed on the website? I've searched for tier 1 critical care facilities in my area (Boston) and come up with only a handful. I'm unsure of the chances that they will be hiring when I graduate.

Thanks everyone
