The application process hasn't even started yet but I didn't even find out about last year's scholarship until a couple days before the deadline. I did get my application in on time but was not fortunate enough to be a recipient. I intend to apply again for the upcoming scholarship. Any tips from those that were accepted? My EFC is 0, I'm in an undergraduate program, and my GPA is 3.4.

I used the criteria of HPSA score of 14 or above, which is required for the scholarship program.

Is it possible to search for openings for a BSN graduate? I only see NP+
I was selected for the NSP, but I am now reconsidering. I searched on the website for jobs in my area, just to get an idea of what's available. There are zero jobs for nurse practitioners in mental health in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Maine. I'm not sure I want to relocate across the country. However, I'm not sure if the search engine actually reflects what will be available when I am looking for a job next year.Can anyone speak to the job availability with HRSA? Do they help you find jobs or are you totally on your own? Do more places qualify than are listed on the website? I've searched for tier 1 critical care facilities in my area (Boston) and come up with only a handful. I'm unsure of the chances that they will be hiring when I graduate.Thanks everyone
That's not how I found available places in my area. I used the regular site where it says to find health centers near me. When I click on the website for the healthcare places, they have jobs listed there. This is not my first time doing this,and I never was sent to the link you posted. How did you do your search?
There are many different options for sites for us to work, although i'm not sure about you specifically. I even found that prisons are on the list for sites where you can work. For the facility to be eligible they have to be in what is deemed a shortage area, so even if it's not on the list, it may qualify. I know people who have had facility jobs like that. So yes I do think other facilities qualify.
As far as them helping you find a job, I doubt it since they kind of make it seem in the application book that it's up to you to get your License and find a place within 6 months.Kind of like your part of the deal if you get the scholarship. Maybe if you are really having trouble finding somewhere or getting hired they will step in.
It's also to my understanding that once you're officially in the HRSA program, there is a packet they send you, and the website looks different when you log into it. I'm sure there will be much more detailed information then.
Hey just wanted to join this conversation. I'm also a student at Marian University's traditional BSN and I've yet to receive a credit check or any email. If I don't get the scholarship I have to withdraw and I'm in the process of securing another spot in a nursing program for WGU. I'm really hoping to get this scholarship so i don't have to start back over and have this set back. I'm also accepting the fact that I may not get it and that's okay too, God has a plan for me that may not include Marian. Good luck to all receipients and Marian students hang in there, none of us have heard anything and maybe NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS for now.
God Bless
I just called the actual direct nursing scholarship office, not the faq/help line and I spoke to a woman who said more notifications will be going out, I asked if it was going to be both positive and negative news or just bad news and she said both. I also asked if the remaining award notifications are contigent upon other students opting out of recieving the award and she said no, and that they havent sent all the initial award notifications yet. Thats good news that there is still hope for those of us who have not recieved the award email yet. Just wanted to spread some positive news this morning! :)
To the blogger that asked about what volunteer work the award recipients did these are my details.
I first am the Community Outreach Chair for a national honor society.
I run a urban gardening organization that teaches people in the city how to plant and grow there own sustainable produce. We also give
classes to children, work with other community groups and give the produce to people who cannot afford it on their own.
I am a coordinator for the Red Cross & The Be the Match Foundation (National bone marrow registry) I organize blood & bone marrow drives.
I work with several dog rescue groups in Detroit
I volunteer at a school for children with learning disabilities (like my daughter)
I also use a voice activated computer program to teach sight impaired & disabled people computer skills to communicate and find employment.
I also am involved politically and fight for students rights and for more financial aid for students in my state. I go to the capital and speak and work with the our local legislators to push for important legislation.
I also am also a member of the SNA (student nurse association) and organize and participate in all their activities.
I also have won several awards and scholarships and loaded that as well as other letters of recommendation from heads of community organizations to the "supporting documents" tab. I made the best use of that tab!!
There are a few other thing that I do that involve my school directly as well. I like to stay busy and I have always felt that it is important to be involved. Everyone is different and you need to find the things that interest you or that you want to change, and go for it.

Hi there, thanks for the info. Do you have the link for the website you used to search? I'm having trouble navigating the site and finding the right links, I think! Are you using this link (Find Shortage Areas: HPSA by State & County) and then googling the individual websites to see if they're hiring?
Also, I didn't realize prisons were eligible. That opens up a lot more options, too.
The more I think about it, the scholarship is such a tremendous opportunity. I may not have total control over where I work, but If I end up working in Northern Maine, I may find that northern Maine is where I belong after all. Haha I need to work on my adventurous side.

Yes I have actually done that (looking at the actual site of the facility) to get more accurate information about which places are really hiring. I do all sorts of things, sometimes I use this HRSA - Find a Health Center - Search Page put in my county to see what health care centers there are and who's hiring. If you go here http://www.hrsa.gov/loanscholarships/scholarships/Nursing/siteeligibility.html It tells you the kinds of eligible sites where you can work. I just don't think you should give up such an amazing opportunity over the fear that you can't find a place. You never know what will happen, or what may open up for you once you actually graduate and are truly looking.
Side note- I just went there and it says prisons are not eligible, which is interesting because just a few months ago they were, and even came up in the HRSA search engine when they showed you sites in your area to work. ( I have been looking at facilities for quite a while, going back to around October) So nitch the prison thing, I guess starting this year for the graduates you can't work there. But I spoke with someone who graduated this past year with the scholarship, and they said the facility just has to be approved by HRSA, so other clinics, or facilities in your area may still qualify.
Update on the prisons. Unfortunately I don't think they're eligible sites after all. This is from the NSP handbook:
"Ineligible facilities include, but are not limited to:
(1) Free-standing clinics that do not qualify as a facility above;
(2) Renal dialysis centers;
(3) Private practice offices;
(4) Assisted living facilities; and
(5) Clinics in prisons and correctional facilities"
Here's info from the handbook on eligible facilities:
NSP participants are expected to serve at a Tier 1 Critical Shortage Facility (***meaning it has an HPSA score of 14 or above).
Type of Facility:
Critical Access Hospital; Disproportionate Share Hospital; Federally Qualified Health Center; Indian Health Service Health Center; Public Hospital; Native Hawaiian Health Center; Rural Health Clinic; Skilled Nursing Facility; State or Local Public Health or Human Services Department
Rubyruby, the link I posted before was for job openings via the NHSC program, which is similar to NSP but awarded to doctors, PA's, NP's, etc. I think that's why there isn't an option for BSN level jobs. However, for NP's who were selected for the NSP, I think the job results are relevant because you can sort facilities via their HPSA score. (Way too many acronyms, btw)

Would you mind posting the link to the job sites? I'd love to take a look myself. Thanks!
